How much each speaker costs
Apple lists the HomePod mini 2 at $149 in the U.S., in all five colors. Pre-orders opened on October 13. Regional prices differ, so check Apple's page for your country.
Amazon sells the new Echo Dot for $99.99. The Kids versions, in Octopus and Penguin designs, start at $109.99 and include a year of Amazon Kids+. A stand is $39.99 extra. The Dot is $49.01 cheaper than the HomePod, a third less.
Siri AI vs Alexa+
Both companies are selling the speaker as a vehicle for a new AI assistant. The timing is different.
Apple says Siri AI is coming in a future software update, not at launch. It will be in English in the U.S., Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and the UK, and it is not initially available in the EU on iOS or iPadOS. It requires the owner of the home to have an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad. Apple also says some server-based features have daily usage limits, and that "expanded access to such features will be available for a fee in the future." Siri requests can run on the device or in Apple's Private Cloud Compute.
Amazon says the new Echo Dot, part of the lineup we covered in Amazon's Echo Show 16 and Alexa+ launch, is built for Alexa+, with the AZ3 chip handling some processing on the device. Alexa+ is included with a Prime membership. For what it costs without Prime, see Is Alexa+ free?.
So on the day you buy, the Echo Dot is the one you can use with its new assistant. The HomePod mini 2 is a speaker with a promised upgrade.
Smart home and sensors
Apple describes the HomePod mini 2 as a home hub for HomeKit and Matter accessories, controlled through the Home app. It can listen for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and send alerts to your Apple devices, though Apple says not to rely on it in emergencies. That feature needs a separate Home app update. The speaker has temperature and humidity sensors.
The Echo Dot has a built-in hub that supports Zigbee, Matter and Thread, so it needs no separate hub, and a built-in eero Wi-Fi extender that covers up to 1,000 square feet. Amazon says its Omnisense sensors detect room temperature and presence. The Dot has four microphones and recognizes who is speaking through Voice ID.
Sound and design
Apple says the HomePod mini 2 uses computational audio for 360-degree sound. You can use one, pair two as a stereo pair, or run several across rooms. With Apple TV 4K (4th generation), matching front and rear pairs of HomePod mini 2 or HomePod (2nd generation) make a four-speaker surround setup. It can also act as a speaker for a Mac with Wi-Fi 6E or later. Lights on top, called Sound Glow, react to music.
Amazon says the Echo Dot has a full-range driver with 50% more bass than the previous generation, in a spherical body wrapped in knit fabric. We found no independent measurements of either speaker in the sources we read, so the sound claims are the companies' own.
Which one fits
If your phone is an iPhone and you want stereo pairs, multiroom audio or a Mac speaker, the HomePod mini 2 is built for that, and the Siri AI will come on top. If you use Android or Prime, or you want a cheaper speaker that also works as a hub and Wi-Fi extender, the Echo Dot costs less and has its assistant now.
Two dates to watch: Apple's Siri AI update has no date, and Apple Home Collection accessories start in December, with select ones in early 2027.
