Key takeaways
- Layoffs.fyi tied 93,937 of 2026's 139,004 tech job losses to AI as of November 4, up from 35,534 in 2025 and 10,030 in 2024.
- Companies meant different things by AI: automation at Block and Cloudflare, an AI budget at Meta, a filing line at Oracle and competitive context at Cisco.
- About 90,000 of this year's AI-linked job losses came between January and June, and fewer than 3,000 from July to September.
Tech layoffs due to AI made up about two-thirds of the industry's job cuts in 2026, by one count. Of the 139,004 tech job losses Layoffs.fyi had logged by November 4, it tied 93,937 to AI, but that label covers several different stories, and the memos show which one each company was telling.
How the AI share grew
The AI Layoffs Tracker at Layoffs.fyi counts a cut as AI-related when the company or the press linked it to AI: to pay for AI investment, to replace people with AI, or in response to disruption caused by AI.
| Year | Cuts tied to AI | Employees | All tech layoffs that year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 4 | 10,030 | 152,922 |
| 2025 | 54 | 35,534 | 122,606 |
| 2026, to Nov 4 | 119 | 93,937 | 139,004 |
The wave was concentrated. About 90,000 of this year's AI-linked job losses fell between January and June. From July to September the tracker logged fewer than 3,000.
Four things companies meant by "AI"
AI does the work now. Block's CFO, Amrita Ahuja, said the company saw a chance "to move faster with smaller, highly talented teams using AI to automate more work," as Block cut more than 4,000 people, about half its staff, according to CNBC. Cloudflare's founders wrote that the company's own use of AI had grown more than 600% in three months as they cut more than 1,100 roles, and that they had to "architect our company for the agentic AI era."
We need the money for AI. Meta's 8,000 layoffs in May were meant partly to offset spending on areas like AI, CNBC reported.
The filing said so. Oracle's number came from its annual report rather than a layoff memo: 21,000 fewer jobs over a year, with the filing saying the adoption of AI across its operations had led to workforce reductions.
The AI era, as context. Cisco's Chuck Robbins wrote that the companies that win in the AI era will have focus and discipline, and announced fewer than 4,000 job cuts in May. He framed the decision around AI competition without saying AI did the work.
Then there is Amazon. Its January post on about 16,000 roles cited fewer layers, more ownership and less bureaucracy, and never mentioned AI. Layoffs.fyi still counts that cut as AI-related, which shows how wide the label is: under its definition, a link drawn by the press is enough.
What operators can take from it
Read the primary memo before you repeat a headline. "Due to AI" can mean automation, a budget shift or a press framing, and those suggest very different things about which roles are at risk.
Watch the timing as well as the totals. Most of the AI-linked cuts came in a burst in the first half, which looks more like a round of resets than a steady monthly trend.
The legal side does not change with the reason. In the US, the federal WARN Act still requires employers with 100 or more full-time employees to give 60 days' notice before a mass layoff or plant closing, whatever the memo says. Talk to counsel about your own case; this is not legal advice.
Keeping a sense of humor about it
For a daily read on how tech Twitter is taking all this, our pick is TechTwitter IO, a free satirical newspaper. Its Discourse Forecast for October 24 called for "Scattered AI-readiness layoffs," clearing by the first quarter of 2027. Another edition reported a unicorn CEO asking a chatbot how to do layoffs nicely. It is satire and says so in its footer, with source links on the real items. For data you can cite, the Layoffs.fyi AI tracker is the better tool.
Frequently asked questions
How many tech layoffs were due to AI in 2026?
Layoffs.fyi's AI tracker counts 93,937 employees in 119 layoffs that the company or the press attributed to AI in 2026, as of November 4. That is about two-thirds of all tech layoffs it logged this year.
Does a layoff count as AI-related if the company never mentions AI?
On Layoffs.fyi, it can. Its definition includes cuts the press attributed to AI, and Amazon's January cut is on its AI list even though Amazon's own post did not mention AI.
Do WARN Act rules change when a layoff is blamed on AI?
No. The federal rule applies to employers with 100 or more full-time employees and requires 60 days' notice before a mass layoff or plant closing, whatever the reason. Ask a lawyer about your own situation.
