Key takeaways
- Meta says it uses your AI interactions to improve its AI and may share messages and region with select partners when an AI cannot answer.
- In the Meta AI app, Delete all chats and media removes chats from History and Media, but not public vibes or shared conversation links.
- Meta's pages we read give no retention period for deleted chats, and its terms say not to rely on outputs for important decisions.
Is Meta AI safe? Meta's own pages do not rate it, so there is no yes or no to give. What they do document is what the assistant collects, who gets it and what you can delete. As of November 4, 2026, Meta says it uses your AI interactions to improve its AI, may share some of them with partners, and tells you not to use answers for important decisions.
This article lists what Meta states and what it leaves out. It is not medical, legal or security advice. How much risk is acceptable depends on what you type into the chat.
What data Meta AI uses
Meta's help center says Meta AI uses your location to make answers more relevant. It can also use profile details such as age, gender and activity-based interests to personalize responses. Depending on your region, AI interactions may also be used to personalize content and ads.
The Meta AI Terms define interactions as the content or messages you or others exchange with the AI. They say Meta may review conversations with automated or manual (human) review. Chats that use Private Processing are the stated exception, because Meta says it cannot read or access those messages.
Voice has its own note. Meta says a voice recording is first available in your history temporarily, while the text transcript stays. If you post a prompt made by voice, the recording stays available until you delete the post.
What Meta shares
Two kinds of sharing are documented.
- With partners. Meta says that if an AI cannot answer a query, it shares your messages and general information such as your region with select partners. The terms add that search terms may go to partners like search engines, and that those queries are not linked to your account.
- By you. You can create a link to a Meta AI conversation. Meta says anyone with the link can see the conversation up to the moment you made it, the link does not expire, and people you send it to can pass it on. Meta advises caution if you have discussed personal information.
Public sharing is separate. A vibe (an AI-generated video) you post stays on your public profile and feed until you remove it. Deleting all chats and media does not remove public vibes.
How to control or delete your data
Meta documents these steps in the Meta AI app, as of November 4, 2026:
- Delete everything: Menu, Settings, Data & privacy, Manage your information, then "Delete all chats and media." Chats, prompts and media then stop showing in History and Media.
- Remove public posts: in the same screen, "Remove all public vibes."
- Delete a shared link: open the conversation, tap Menu, then "Delete link." This does not delete the conversation itself.
- Export a copy: Manage your information, Download your information, then Create export. Deleted content is not included.
Meta's page on training data, how Meta uses information for generative AI models, points to its Privacy Center. We could not read the text of that page, so we cannot say what choices it offers about training. If you want Meta AI out of your apps, see our guide on how to turn off Meta AI.
What Meta does not document
- How long Meta keeps chats after you delete them. The deletion page gives no retention period beyond the voice-recording note.
- A numbered list of the partners that receive your messages.
- Whether deleting a chat removes it from data already used to improve AI.
- A single page that says whether Meta AI is secure. Meta's terms say outputs "may not reflect accurate, complete, or current information" and tell you not to rely on them.
What the terms say about sensitive topics
Meta's terms tell you to avoid sending information you do not want the AI to retain and use, particularly on sensitive topics. They say you are responsible for checking outputs, especially for medical, financial or legal decisions. Meta also says the apps are not available everywhere, so the features and controls above may differ by country.
Next step: before your next chat, check what the Data & privacy screen in the Meta AI app shows, and compare it with the lists above.
