Meta AI vs ChatGPT comes down to where you want your assistant and what you want it to do. Meta AI lives inside Meta's apps and is free for everyday use, while ChatGPT is a standalone assistant with a free tier and paid plans from $8 to $500 a month. This comparison is based on the products' docs and published results, not on our own hands-on testing, and prices are as of November 3, 2026.
Meta says Meta AI runs on Muse Spark, a model it announced on April 8, 2026. OpenAI lists several GPT-6 models across its ChatGPT plans.

What Meta AI is
Meta AI is the assistant built into Meta's products. Meta's July 24 announcement says Muse Spark 1.1 powers it in the Meta AI app and on meta.ai. Meta describes it as moving from answering questions to completing tasks: building plans, connecting to email and calendar apps, making slides, and sending a daily briefing.
That rollout started in select markets, with WhatsApp and more countries to follow. Meta's WhatsApp page says you can chat by text or voice, edit photos, generate images and summarize unread messages. It also describes incognito chats that disappear when you leave them. Meta notes some features may not be available to all users.

What ChatGPT costs
As of November 3, 2026, OpenAI's pricing page lists these plans:
- Free: $0 a month.
- Go: $8 a month.
- Plus: $20 a month.
- Pro: from $100 a month, with plans at $100, $200 and $500. Ultrafast mode is on the $500 plan.
- Business: $20 per user a month billed annually, or $25 billed monthly.
OpenAI estimates Plus and Business users get 15 to 160 GPT-6.1 Sol messages and 350 to 3,000 GPT-6 Luna messages per five-hour period. These are estimates, not fixed limits, and weekly limits may apply. The page lists no limits for Free and Go. For more on the free tier, see Is ChatGPT free.
What Meta AI costs
Meta's Meta One announcement of September 15, 2026 says the core experience across its apps and Meta AI "has always been free, and that's not changing." The paid bundles add allowances rather than gate the assistant:
- Core: $7.99 a month, with more Meta AI image and video generation.
- Premium: $19.99 a month, with the highest Meta AI content creation allowance across Meta's apps.
Meta says plans, benefits and prices may vary by region, app and account.
Which one fits
Meta AI fits people who already live in WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook and want an assistant there at no cost. ChatGPT fits people who want a dedicated assistant with a clear ladder of paid tiers, including coding tools through Codex on Plus.
The pages we read do not let us say which answers better. Neither company published benchmark scores for these consumer products in the pages we read, so any claim of a winner on quality would be a guess.
How the free tiers differ
Both products can be used at no cost, but the free tiers are built differently. ChatGPT's free plan is a standalone assistant, and OpenAI lists GPT-6 Luna at standard speed for it, subject to rollout. Meta AI's free use comes with an account in Meta's apps, and Meta's paid bundles raise creation allowances instead of unlocking a different assistant.
The practical difference is the paywall. On ChatGPT, more usage and stronger models such as GPT-6.1 Sol sit behind Plus at $20 a month. On Meta AI, the published upgrades are about more image and video generation, and the lowest bundle costs $7.99 a month.
What we don't know
- How Meta AI's free usage is capped. Meta has published no message limits.
- How Muse Spark compares with GPT-6 models on independent tests.
- Which Meta AI features each country gets, since the rollout is staged.
