Gemini and Copilot are both AI assistants, but they are sold differently. Google sells Gemini as a standalone AI plan, from $0 to $99.99 a month. Microsoft sells Copilot mostly inside a Microsoft 365 subscription, from $9.99 a month. This Gemini vs Copilot comparison is based on the products' docs and published results: Google's Gemini subscriptions page, Microsoft's Copilot for individuals page and Microsoft Learn's Copilot license options, all read on October 30, 2026.

The short answer: Gemini is the better fit if you live in Gmail, Docs and Google storage. Copilot is the better fit if you live in Word, Excel and Outlook. Neither company publishes a head-to-head benchmark, and we found no independent one, so the choice comes down to the apps you already use.

What Gemini costs and includes

Google's page lists four consumer tiers. Free costs $0. Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month and doubles Free's usage, adds video generation and 200 Google Flow credits, and gives 400 GB of storage. Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month, gives 4x Free usage, access to Gemini 4 Argon, 1,000 Flow credits and 5 TB of storage, and adds Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Vids, Chrome auto browse and YouTube Premium Lite. Ultra starts at $99.99 a month and tops out at 20x Pro usage.

Google says the Gemini app limits depend on prompt complexity, features and chat length, and refresh every five hours until a weekly limit applies. The page says AI plans are for users 18 and over. For what the free tier covers, see our guide on whether Gemini is free, and on Gemini 4 Argon access.

What Copilot costs and includes

For individuals, Microsoft puts Copilot inside Microsoft 365. Personal is $9.99 a month for one person and includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook with Copilot, plus higher-than-free usage of Copilot chat, image creation and visual AI help. Family is $12.99 a month for up to six people, but the Copilot features work only for the subscription owner.

Premium is $19.99 a month. Microsoft says it adds "extensive" usage and limited use of agentic AI, meaning AI that carries out multi-step tasks such as research and analytics. Pro is $99.99 a month, billed monthly only, with the highest usage levels. Microsoft's page gives no numeric usage caps and does not name the models behind each plan. For the free version, see our article on whether Copilot is free.

Business plans compared

At work the two split the same way. Microsoft Learn says Microsoft 365 Copilot is available with Microsoft 365 E7 or as an add-on for eligible commercial, government and education plans. Copilot Business is an add-on for organizations with up to 300 users on eligible Microsoft 365 Business licenses, sold with an annual commitment. Eligible Business plans include Business Basic, Standard and Premium. Microsoft Learn lists no prices on that page.

Google's Gemini Enterprise Business edition starts at $21 a seat a month for up to 300 seats. The Standard and Plus editions start at $30 a seat a month with unlimited seats and need a call with sales. Google says customer data in Gemini Enterprise is not used to train its models.

How to choose

  • Pick Gemini if you use Gmail and Google Drive, want a cheap $4.99 tier, or want the storage bundled in.
  • Pick Copilot if your documents are in Word and Excel and your team already pays for Microsoft 365. The AI comes with the subscription you may already have.
  • If several people share one plan, note that Copilot on Family works for the owner only. Google's page does not describe sharing for its consumer AI plans, so check before you buy.

What we could not compare

Neither company publishes usage caps for its paid tiers in numbers, only multiples of Free (Google) or words like "extensive" (Microsoft). Microsoft's page does not name its models. Google's page says "more than 160 countries" in one place and "more than 140" in a footnote for AI Plus. Prices and plans change, so confirm them on the company pages before you pay.
