Key takeaways
- As of October 29, 2026, Google lists Gemini in Docs for Google AI Pro, Google AI Ultra and Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus and Enterprise.
- Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month and Workspace Business Starter do not list Docs features.
- Free personal accounts can only use Docs features through the opt-in Workspace Experiments program, which Google says varies in availability.
Gemini in Google Docs is not part of a free Google Account's standard Gemini access. As of October 29, 2026, Google's help page for Gemini in Workspace lists Docs features for Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra on personal accounts, and for Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus on work and school accounts. The one free route is an opt-in early-access program.
Plenty of people use the free Gemini app and assume the same access reaches the side panel in Docs. It doesn't, at least not by default.
Which plans include Gemini in Docs

The Google AI plans page says the same for the consumer tiers. Pro lists Gemini in Docs and Sheets, while Plus lists proofreading in Gmail and no Docs features.
Is there a free way to use Gemini in Docs?
Partly. Google runs Workspace Experiments, an early-access program, and its help page says Gemini features in Docs are part of it. You need a personal Google Account you manage and you must be 18 or older. Work and school Workspace accounts can't join.
The page lists these Docs features: Help me write, Write and edit, image generation, personalized documents, document summaries, comment summaries, audio generation and Docs Live voice commands on mobile. Google says quality and availability may vary, and some features arrive gradually, so you may not see all of them.
To check whether you have access, open a document and look for the Gemini icon. If "Ask Gemini" appears at the top right, you do. Leaving the program is permanent. Google says you can't rejoin, and the opt-out is under Tools in Docs.
Google also runs a free US offer for Gmail, covering Help me write, AI Overviews for email threads and suggested replies. The Docs help page says it doesn't cover Docs.
Workspace: it used to be a paid add-on
For work and school accounts, Gemini is part of the plan. Google's Workspace Updates post notes that the Gemini Business and Gemini Enterprise add-ons have not been sold since January 15, 2025, and that Gemini in Docs on Android came to Business Standard and Plus and Enterprise Standard and Plus. Google's Workspace pricing page shows Starter without Gemini in Docs and Standard, Plus and Enterprise with it.
The Docs help page also leaves out Enterprise Starter and Frontline Plus.
What limits apply
Consumer limits for Docs aren't published as numbers. The Pro and Ultra plans describe usage limits in relative terms, and Ultra lists the highest.
Workspace is more specific for at least one feature. Google's usage limits page says that for the "match writing style and match document format" features in Docs, Business Standard and Plus get 30 uses per user each month and Enterprise Standard and Plus get 150. Business Starter gets none. Follow-up prompts count, and the limit resets at 12 AM Pacific on the first of each month. That page doesn't cover other Docs features or Google AI Pro and Ultra.
Gemini in Docs also requires you to be 18 or older, and some features don't work in every language.
What to check before paying
Open Docs and look for Ask Gemini. If it's there, you have access through a plan or the program. If not, the cheapest consumer plan with Docs listed is Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month, as of October 29, 2026. Google AI Plus at $4.99 does not list Docs, so check the plan page for your country before buying it for this. Business Starter users need to move up to Standard or higher, or ask their admin.
