Ahrefs pricing for founders, with the credit math done

Ahrefs pricing looks simple on the page: four plans, from $29 to $449 a month. What decides your bill is the credit system underneath, and that is where founders tend to overpay. This piece lays out the plans, prices a typical research session in credits, and compares it with paying per report.

The plans

Annual billing saves up to 17%. Extra users cost $40 a month each on Lite, $60 on Standard and $80 on Advanced.

Starter has fine print worth reading. It renews monthly only, you cannot buy more credits or add users, and there are no exports. Reports on sites you have not verified stop at 250 rows, and the Top pages report at 25.

What a credit buys

Opening a report costs 1 credit. You spend another each time you apply filters, change the dates, open the SERP viewer or switch a report's mode, for example to one link per domain. Paging, sorting and reopening the same report within 30 minutes are free.

A realistic look at one competitor goes like this:

1. Open the overview: 1 credit.
2. Open backlinks: 1 credit.
3. Switch to one link per domain: 1 credit.
4. Filter to followed links: 1 credit.
5. Open organic keywords: 1 credit.
6. Filter to top 10 positions: 1 credit.

That is about 6 credits per rival. On Starter's 200, you can do this roughly 33 times a month. On Lite's 1,000, about 166 times. Most founders do it a few times a month, which means most of what they pay for goes unused.

The founder's math

Say you check four competitors once a month: their links and their keywords. On Ahrefs, the cheapest plan that lets you export or see more than 250 rows is Lite, at $129 a month.

Now price the same job per report on seogeoaeo.ai, which sells credits in monthly plans and charges each tool run separately:

That fits inside the Indie plan, $29 a month for 2,000 credits, with room for a website check of your own home page at 67 credits and plenty left over. Failed runs are refunded, so a mistyped domain does not cost you.

What the cheaper route gives up

Be clear about what you are buying. seogeoaeo.ai's Backlink Finder lists a domain's 100 strongest linking sites and 50 link texts, from a third-party data provider. Ahrefs runs its own index and, on Lite, shows up to 2,500 rows per report. seogeoaeo.ai has no rank tracker and no link history, and its monthly credits reset at renewal. Top-ups can be added to an active plan, from $19 for 1,000 credits, and those never expire.

When the Ahrefs bill is worth paying

If a growth hire spends every morning in Site Explorer, Standard at $249 is good value: unlimited credits per user, two years of history, Content Explorer and Batch Analysis. If you report weekly rankings to a board, you need a rank tracker, and Ahrefs has one on every paid plan.

A simple rule

Count how many times last month someone on your team opened Ahrefs to look at a competitor. Under ten, pay per report. Over fifty, keep the subscription. In between, run both for a month and compare the bills.
