How to remove Meta AI from WhatsApp: what you can and can't turn off

You can't remove Meta AI from WhatsApp. As of November 6, 2026, WhatsApp's Help Center describes no setting that turns it off, hides the Meta AI icon on the Chats tab or removes it from the search bar. What the pages do cover is smaller: you can delete your chats with it, wipe Meta's copy of them, take it out of a group and use it in a chat that disappears. This guide walks through each, and marks what we could not confirm. For other Meta apps, see our guide to turning off Meta AI.

WhatsApp calls Meta AI an optional service. Optional here means you don't have to use it. It does not mean you can uninstall it. The help pages we read give no steps to disable it, and we found no official one. Many blog guides say otherwise, so check any steps against your own app.

How to delete your chats with Meta AI

WhatsApp's article on deleting chats with Meta AI gives these steps on Android. Menu labels can differ on other devices.

To delete one chat:

1. Open the chat with Meta AI.
2. Tap the chat history icon, a clock with a circular arrow.
3. Tap and hold the chat you want to remove.
4. Tap Delete chat, then Delete.

To delete several, tap and hold one chat, select the others, tap the trash can icon, then tap Delete. WhatsApp says deleted chats can't be restored.

How to delete Meta's copy of your chats

Deleting a chat on your phone does not delete Meta AI's copy of your messages. WhatsApp says to use a command for that.

• /reset-ai resets one chat. Open the chat with Meta AI, tap the chat history icon, tap the chat, type /reset-ai in the message field and send it.
• /reset-all-ais resets all individual and group chats you have used with Meta AI. Open the chat with Meta AI, type /reset-all-ais and send it.

The reset commands don't work in incognito chats. The help page also links to a separate article on downloading your chat history, which we did not read, so we can't say how that works.

How to remove Meta AI from a WhatsApp group

Any group member can add Meta AI to a group. Only group admins can remove it. WhatsApp's group article says admins can do it at any time. When it is added, every member sees a system message and Meta AI posts a welcome message. It can read and answer messages only in that chat, and it can't change group settings.

For the Meta AI with Private Processing version, WhatsApp's group member article gives these steps:

1. Open the group and tap the group name.
2. Scroll to the member list and tap Meta AI.
3. Tap Remove from group, then OK.

Once it is removed, WhatsApp says it can no longer process and respond to messages in the group. If you are not an admin, you can ask one, or leave the group.

Incognito chats with Meta AI

If your worry is what stays behind, WhatsApp offers incognito chats with Meta AI. WhatsApp says only you can see them, and that Meta and WhatsApp can't access them, because the prompts run in Private Processing, a confidential computing environment. By default the conversation disappears when you leave. You can choose to keep it, and it is then saved only on your device.

Web search in these chats is on by default. WhatsApp says queries go to select search engines without being linked to your account, and you can turn the option off. The help page does not give steps for starting an incognito chat, so look for the option inside the Meta AI chat.

What we could not confirm

• Many guides online tell you to mute or block the Meta AI chat, or to flip a switch under Settings and Chats. We did not find these in the help pages we read, so we don't list them as steps. If the Meta AI chat has a mute option in your app, it quiets notifications at most. It does not remove the feature.
• WhatsApp says that using the search bar to ask Meta AI doesn't affect your personal messaging. The page doesn't say whether you can switch the suggestions off.
• Meta AI is available only in certain countries, and in some markets it depends on the device language. If you can't see the icon, you may not have it yet.
• Parents can limit a teen's Meta AI chats. Per WhatsApp's chat guide, go to Settings, Parental controls, tap Meta AI, then select Limited.

WhatsApp can change this at any time, and Meta has added Meta AI entry points before. Check the Help Center pages linked above for the latest steps.
