Oracle announced a collaboration with OpenAI on October 27 that brings ChatGPT and Codex into Oracle's business applications, according to Oracle's press release. The package includes an Oracle AI Workspace, a security service, an app builder and a free-to-start bundle for small businesses.

The practical change is that an employee can ask ChatGPT to do work inside Oracle systems, such as NetSuite or Fusion Applications, instead of switching between tools. Oracle says approvals and controls stay in place.

The four products

  • Oracle AI Workspace. Plugins in ChatGPT connect OpenAI models to Oracle Fusion Applications, NetSuite, Oracle AI Database and OCI, so staff can look up data and run approved workflows. Oracle says it keeps the governance and approval controls enterprises need.
  • Oracle AI Security Mesh. A managed service that uses OpenAI cyber models and Oracle's testing tools to find vulnerabilities in applications and infrastructure, on OCI, other clouds and on-premises. Customers set where testing is allowed.
  • Oracle App Composer. Employees build internal apps with Codex, and Oracle runs the deployment on OCI with identity, permissions and audit controls. It also supports APEXlang, a new Oracle technology the company says avoids opaque generated code.
  • Oracle AI SMB Bundle. A free-to-start package with $12,000 a year in Oracle cloud credits. It includes ChatGPT Business, Oracle AI Workspace, Codex, App Composer, OCI and NetSuite QuickStart. Oracle says terms and restrictions apply.

What the executives said

Oracle CEO Clay Magouyrk said the product suite unites OpenAI's capabilities with "Oracle applications, data, and cloud infrastructure." OpenAI president Greg Brockman said the partnership puts frontier AI "into everyday operations."

What we don't know yet

The release gives no availability dates for the four products, no pricing beyond the SMB credits, and no usage numbers. It does not say how much of the work OpenAI's models do versus Oracle's own.

This announcement came the same day Oracle said Google TPUs are coming to OCI. Watch for dates and pricing on the Workspace plugins.
