Perplexity vs ChatGPT: plans, prices and limits compared

Perplexity vs ChatGPT comes down to the job. Perplexity is built around search with cited answers, and ChatGPT is a general assistant that also writes, codes and reasons. As of October 27, 2026, both have a free tier. Perplexity Pro costs $17 a month billed annually, and ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month.

This comparison is based on the products' docs and published results, not our own hands-on testing. Prices and limits change often, so each one below carries its date.

Perplexity vs ChatGPT at a glance

Perplexity's monthly prices for Pro and Max were not shown on the page we read, only the annual-billing rates. ChatGPT prices come from OpenAI's pricing docs page, which is written around Codex usage, so some details below cover coding limits only.

What Perplexity gives you

Perplexity's pricing page lists three individual plans. Free is for limited daily use. Pro, at $17 a month billed annually (as of October 27, 2026), adds expanded Computer access, 4,000 bonus credits, Deep Research, a choice of top AI models and higher usage limits. Max, at $167 a month billed annually, adds 35,000 bonus credits and the highest limits.

The help center puts numbers on the free tier: 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 research query a month, with no browser agent and no file or app creation. Its Pro article says Pro gives about 10 times as many citations per answer, and access to models from other labs, such as GPT-5.2, Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Gemini 3.1 Pro. That means a Perplexity subscription partly resells access to other companies' models.

What ChatGPT gives you

OpenAI's pricing docs list Free at $0, Go at $8 a month, Plus at $20 a month and Pro from $100 a month, as of October 27, 2026. Pro comes as $100, $200 and $500 plans, and only the $500 plan has Ultrafast mode. Plus includes GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, and you can buy credits when you hit limits.

For Plus, OpenAI estimates 15 to 160 local Codex messages per five hours on GPT-6.1 Sol, and 350 to 3,000 on GPT-6 Luna. These are estimates, not fixed limits. Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit.

Which one fits which job

Perplexity's design centers on looking things up and showing where the answer came from. If you mostly research, check facts or read sources, that is the product's own focus, and Pro's Deep Research and citations are aimed at it.

ChatGPT's plans are built around a wider range of work, including writing and coding. It also has the cheaper entry point at $8 a month, and a far higher ceiling for heavy users, at up to $500 a month.

At the middle tier the gap is small: $17 a month billed annually against $20 a month. Perplexity's annual billing matters here, because we did not see a monthly price on the page we read.

What we could not confirm

We could not open chatgpt.com/pricing or OpenAI's help center, which returned access errors. The ChatGPT figures come from OpenAI's pricing docs page, which centers on Codex, so it does not list every ChatGPT feature or message limit. We have no independent benchmark of the two products against each other, and none is cited here.

Check both pricing pages before you subscribe. Prices, models and limits on both have changed several times this year.
