Key takeaways

  • As of November 1, 2026, Claude Code is included in Claude Pro, which costs $20 a month billed monthly or $17 a month billed annually.
  • Pro has a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit, and Claude Code shares both with claude.ai and Claude Desktop.
  • Anthropic publishes no exact Pro limit figures; at the limit you can wait, turn on usage credits at API rates, use Console credits or move to Max.

Yes, Claude Code is included in the Claude Pro plan. As of November 1, 2026, Anthropic's pricing page lists Claude Code on Pro, which costs $20 a month billed monthly or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front). There is no separate Claude Code fee on top.

The catch is the limits. Pro does not give you a fixed number of Claude Code prompts. It gives you a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit, and Claude Code shares both with the Claude chat apps. For the full plan ladder, see our Claude Code pricing guide. This piece covers only what Pro gets you.

What Pro includes for Claude Code

Per the Pro plan help article, Claude Code access is one of the plan's listed benefits. You sign in with the same account you use for Claude. The help center guide says it works in the terminal and in IDEs, including VS Code, Cursor and other VS Code forks, and JetBrains IDEs. IDE use counts toward the same limits.

On the pricing page, Pro also lists Fable as "paid with usage credits". That means Anthropic's top model family is not part of the Pro allowance. You pay for it separately.

Claude Pro usage limits in Claude Code

Pro has two caps, according to the help center:

Limit How it works on Pro
Five-hour session The window starts with your first message and resets in full five hours later
Weekly Applies across all models and resets at a fixed time assigned to your account
Shared pool Claude Code, claude.ai and Claude Desktop all draw from the same limits

Anthropic does not publish exact numbers for Pro. The pricing page says only that Pro gets "more usage than Free" every five hours and every week, and that how fast you reach a limit depends on the model, how long your chats are and how large your files are. Anthropic also says it may add other caps, such as weekly or monthly ones, at its discretion.

In practice this means a long Claude Code session with a big codebase drains the allowance faster than short questions do. Because chat and code share one pool, a morning of heavy Claude Code work leaves less for chat that afternoon.

One small cushion: if you hit the five-hour limit in the middle of a response, Claude Code may finish the current step and show "Usage limit reached · wrapping up". On Pro this applies up to once per weekly period, counts toward your weekly limit, and Anthropic says it is rolling out gradually.

What to do when you hit the Pro limit

The help center lists four options:

  • Wait for the limit to reset.
  • Turn on usage credits, which keep you working at standard API rates. You prepay, and you can set a monthly spend limit. They apply to both chat and Claude Code, per the usage credits article.
  • Switch to a Claude Console account and buy API credits.
  • Upgrade to Max, which Anthropic lists at $100 a month and 5x Pro usage.

To see where you stand, run /status in Claude Code, or open Settings > Usage on claude.ai. Anthropic's cost docs say /usage shows plan usage bars for subscribers, and the dollar figure in its session block does not apply to Pro billing.

How to use Claude Code on Pro without paying API rates

Install Claude Code (our install guide has the steps), run claude, and sign in with your Claude account. Two things push you onto API billing by accident, both from the help center:

  • An ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable overrides your subscription. Usage is then billed at API rates.
  • If you were previously signed in to a Console account, run /login inside Claude Code to switch to your plan.

If the plan sign-in option does not appear, the help center suggests running /logout, updating with claude update, restarting the terminal, then running claude again.

What we don't know

Anthropic does not say how many prompts or tokens a Pro window holds, and its Claude Code article does not say which models Pro can use. The pricing page says plans and prices can change at Anthropic's discretion, so check it before you subscribe.

Frequently asked questions

You can wait for the reset, turn on usage credits billed at standard API rates, buy Claude Console API credits, or upgrade to Max. Run /status in Claude Code to check your remaining allocation.
