The Claude usage limit reset works on two clocks. According to Anthropic's help center, the session limit on paid plans resets every five hours, and the weekly limit resets once a week. As of October 30, 2026, the fastest way to see your own reset time is Settings > Usage on claude.ai.
This guide is for anyone on Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise who has hit a limit or wants to know when they will. It covers what resets and when, where to check it, and what you can do while you wait.
What resets, and when
Anthropic documents these limits on paid plans:
| Limit | Reset | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Session limit | Every five hours | Paid plans |
| Weekly limit | Once a week | Paid plans |
| Fable weekly limit | Once a week | Max plans only |
Anthropic's pages say the session resets "every five hours" and the weekly limit "once a week". They do not say which weekday or clock time the weekly reset falls on, or whether the five-hour window starts at your first message. Some third-party guides claim to know. Anthropic's help center does not say, so the reliable answer is the reset time your own account shows.
All Claude surfaces count toward the same limits. Anthropic says claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop draw from one allowance, so heavy use in one place leaves less for the others. How fast you use it up depends on conversation length and complexity, the features you use, the model, and the effort level.
How to check when your Claude limit resets
In the app:
- Open Settings > Usage, or go to claude.ai/settings/usage.
- Read the session and weekly bars. They show how much of each limit you have used.
- Check the reset information next to each bar.
Per Anthropic's extra usage article, the same page shows real-time consumption, month-to-date usage credit costs and past usage history, and keeps your included plan usage separate from usage credit spend. Our guide on how to check Claude token usage goes through each surface in more detail.
In Claude Code, run /usage. Per the Claude Code costs documentation, subscribers see plan usage bars, activity stats and a breakdown of what counts against their limits. If the request for plan limits fails, /usage shows the last bars it loaded in the past 60 minutes with a "Showing last-known usage" note. Press r to retry.
A message such as "rate limited until 3:14am" inside /usage means Claude Code cannot fetch your plan limits again until then. It does not mean your work with Claude is limited.
What you see when you hit a limit
Claude Code shows "You've hit your session limit" or "You've hit your weekly limit". The docs say these are seat-based windows shared across all models, so switching models with /model does not restore access, and that the message shows when the window resets. The model-specific messages, "You've hit your Opus limit" and "You've hit your Sonnet limit", are different: switching to a model outside that family keeps you working.
On Pro and Max, you may also see "Usage limit reached · wrapping up" if you hit the five-hour limit mid-response. Anthropic's Claude Code plan article says Claude Code then finishes the step in progress. The allowance is small, counts toward your weekly limit, and does not apply to new messages. Pro gets it up to once per weekly period, Max can get it each time it reaches a five-hour limit, and it is rolling out gradually.
Your options when you are out of usage
- Wait. The limit resets on its own schedule. On Claude Code v2.1.234 or later, the docs describe a way to wait and continue the interrupted task automatically after the reset, chosen from
/rate-limit-options. - Turn on usage credits. Anthropic says that with usage credits enabled, work continues on credits instead of stopping. Usage credits do not change the reset times.
- Upgrade your plan. Anthropic says a new plan's limits apply immediately.
To set up usage credits, per the help center: open Settings > Usage, click Enable in the Usage credits section, add a payment method, and set your spending preferences. You can set a monthly cap with "Adjust limit" or choose "Set to unlimited". You must prepay by adding funds. In Claude Code, /usage-credits opens the right settings page for you. If you subscribed through a mobile app, you can enable and buy usage credits only on the web app.
Can you reset your Claude limit early?
Nothing in the help center pages we read describes a way to reset a limit early. The documented ways to keep working are usage credits or a plan upgrade. Anthropic does not describe a support request or setting that clears a limit. Prices, plan allowances and limits change, so check Settings > Usage for what applies to your account today.
For Team and Enterprise members, the Claude Code docs say usage draws from a per-seat allowance that resets on a rolling five-hour window and a weekly window, shared with Claude chat and Cowork. An organization admin can turn on usage credits and set spend limits for the organization, a group or a member.
