Key takeaways

  • Grok Imagine generates images and video in the Grok apps and through xAI's Imagine API.
  • In the apps it draws on a shared weekly usage pool; Premium, Super and Ultra get 4x, 15x and 50x the base usage of Plus.
  • The API charges $0.02 to $0.04 per image and $0.02 to $0.08 per second of video, with video capped at 15 seconds.

Grok Imagine is xAI's image and video generator. You can use it inside the Grok apps, where it draws on your plan's weekly usage, or through the Imagine API, where you pay per image or per second of video. As of November 5, 2026, xAI's Grok docs describe it in one line: "Create images and video with Grok Imagine."

The docs don't say which plans include Imagine, and the subscription pricing page doesn't mention it. What they do show is how usage is metered, which decides how much you can make.

What Grok Imagine does

Imagine turns text prompts into images and video. On the API side, xAI's Imagine API guides list three models:

  • grok-imagine-image-2.0 generates and edits images.
  • grok-imagine-video-1.5 generates video, animates a still image, and takes reference images and voice references.
  • grok-imagine-video edits existing video.

xAI's launch page for the API says video can come with native audio and that the tools can restyle scenes, add, remove or swap objects, and control motion. The company says the model ranks first in the Artificial Analysis text-to-video rankings. That is xAI's claim, shown on its own page.

Which plans include Grok Imagine

xAI's X Subscription pricing page lists five consumer tiers. It gives each a usage multiplier but says nothing about Imagine by name.

Plan Monthly Annual Included usage
Free $0 $0 Limited, no figure given
Plus $8 $80 Base
Premium $30 $300 4x
Super $100 $1,000 15x
Ultra $200 $2,000 50x

Prices are as of November 5, 2026 and exclude sales tax. Plus doesn't include Grok Bot. Premium, Super and Ultra do. For whether Imagine works on the Free tier, xAI's docs point to its pricing page at x.ai/pricing, which could not be read by script, so the Free-tier answer is unconfirmed.

How much Grok Imagine costs and how the limits work

In the apps there is no per-image price. According to xAI's Grok FAQ, paid plans share one weekly usage pool across Chat, Imagine, Voice, Build and other products. It replaced separate daily limits for each product. A chat message uses little compute and a high-quality video uses a lot, so video drains the pool faster.

  • Settings, then Usage, shows the percentage used, a breakdown by product, and the weekly reset time.
  • At the limit, paid features pause until the reset. xAI says the limit is "not a hard stop": you can buy Extra Usage Credits (minimum $5, web only for now), upgrade, or turn on Auto Top Up.
  • Credits are priced at standard rates, so each action costs more than inside your plan. They expire one year after purchase.
  • 720p videos drop to 480p once you reach your tier's 720p cap. The FAQ doesn't list the caps.
  • Generated images and videos carry a Grok watermark, and there is no setting to remove it.

Imagine API prices and limits

Developers pay per use, separate from consumer plans. xAI's models page lists these prices as of November 5, 2026:

Model Price
grok-imagine-image $0.02 per image
grok-imagine-image-2.0 $0.04 per image
grok-imagine-video $0.050 per second
grok-imagine-video-1.5 $0.080 per second
grok-imagine-video-1.5-lite $0.020 per second

The video guide says video cost depends on both duration and resolution, but the models page gives one rate per model. Image edits are billed for the input and the output image.

Documented limits:

  • Up to 10 images per generation request.
  • Up to 5 source images per edit.
  • Video up to 15 seconds.
  • Reference-to-video on grok-imagine-video-1.5: up to 14 reference images and 3 voice references.
  • grok-imagine-image allows 6 requests per second, per its model page.

Video requests are asynchronous. You submit one, poll with the request ID, and get a URL when the status is done. It can also end as failed or expired.

What we don't know

xAI's docs don't state the Imagine allowance for any consumer tier, the 720p caps, or the Free-tier limits. Check the Usage tab in your account for your own limits. For the rest of the Grok lineup, see our pieces on whether Grok is free and how to use Grok.
