Key takeaways

  • Turning off Keep Activity stops new Gemini chats from being saved to your Activity or used to train AI models, unless you submit feedback.
  • Google still keeps conversations for up to 72 hours, and says human review for service and safety purposes is not stopped.
  • On work or school accounts, a Workspace administrator controls the setting.

To stop Gemini from using your chats to train Google's AI, switch off the Keep Activity setting. In the Gemini app, open your profile, tap Gemini Apps Activity, tap On near the top, and choose Turn off. This is how to turn off training in Gemini, or what some people call "gemini how to turn off data training". Google's Gemini Apps Help describes the steps, and the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub explains what the setting changes.

There is no separate "training" switch for personal accounts. Keep Activity controls both whether chats are saved and whether they are used to improve Google's AI. Turning it off does not erase everything, and it does not apply the same way to work or school accounts. The details are below.

What turning off Keep Activity does

Per the Privacy Hub, with Keep Activity on, your chats and uploads are saved in your Gemini Apps Activity and used to improve Google services, including training generative AI models. With it off:

  • Future chats don't appear in your Activity.
  • Future chats aren't used to train AI models, unless you submit feedback.
  • Gems you create are still saved to your account, but your chats with Gems are not saved.
  • Some Connected Apps, including Google Workspace apps, are unavailable. Google's activity page lists only Device assistance, Gemini Notebook, Messages, Phone and WhatsApp as still available.

The activity page offers two choices: "Turn off" and "Turn off and delete activity". The second also removes your existing activity. The first stops saving new chats and leaves old ones.

What it does not do

  • Short-term storage continues. Google says conversations are still saved with your account for up to 72 hours to provide the service and process feedback. They don't show in your Activity. The Privacy Hub adds that Google uses the last 24 hours of a chat as context to respond, and keeps chats for 72 hours to guard against system failures.
  • Human review is not fully off. The Privacy Hub says turning off Keep Activity doesn't stop Google from using chats to respond to you or to protect Google, its users and the public, including with human review.
  • Feedback changes things. If you submit feedback while Keep Activity is off, Google also collects the feedback, the last 24 hours of related chats and any associated content. Reviewed feedback is kept for up to three years, disconnected from your account.
  • Reviewed chats stay. Chats already reviewed by human reviewers are not deleted when you delete your activity. Google keeps them for up to three years, disconnected from your account.
  • Anonymized data. The Privacy Hub says your Gemini settings don't control the creation of anonymized data from your chats to improve Google services.
  • Gems and shared links. Deleting activity doesn't delete Gems or public chat links. Remove those separately.

How to turn it off on the web

  1. Go to gemini.google.com and sign in.
  2. Click Settings & help, then Activity. You can also open myactivity.google.com/product/gemini.
  3. Near the top, click On.
  4. Choose Turn off, or Turn off and delete activity.

How to turn it off in the Gemini mobile app

The steps are the same on Android phones and tablets and on iPhone and iPad, according to Google's help pages for Android and iPhone and iPad.

  1. Open the Gemini app.
  2. Tap the menu icon at the left, then your profile picture or initial.
  3. Tap Gemini Apps Activity.
  4. Near the top, tap On, then choose Turn off or Turn off and delete activity.

On an iPhone or iPad you can also use the web steps in the browser: go to gemini.google.com, tap the menu icon, then Settings & help, then Activity.

Use a temporary chat instead

If you want to keep Keep Activity on but not train on one conversation, the Privacy Hub says temporary chats aren't used to train models or improve AI with human reviewers. Chats and related data in temporary chats are kept for 72 hours, the same as with Keep Activity off.

Work or school accounts

If you sign in with a Google Workspace account, your administrator controls Gemini Apps Activity. Google's help pages say you may not be able to change the settings or see how long your chats are kept. The Privacy Hub says use of Gemini with a work or school account may be subject to different data handling terms, and points to the Generative AI in Google Workspace Privacy Hub for them. It does not spell out those terms itself, so ask your admin what applies.

Auto-delete and the other setting to check

By default, activity is deleted automatically after 18 months. You can change this to 3 or 36 months, or turn auto-delete off. Separately, using your audio, Gemini Live videos and screenshares to improve Google services is off by default and needs Keep Activity on.

Google's pages change often, and menu labels differ slightly between versions. This guide reflects the help pages as of October 27, 2026. Don't type anything into Gemini that you wouldn't want a reviewer to see: Google's own advice is not to enter confidential information.
