Key takeaways

  • Microsoft says Copilot now opens from a Dynamic Action Button in the lower-right corner of the document, so it may only have moved.
  • The most common fix on Windows and Mac is to refresh the license (File > Account > Update License on Windows) and restart every Microsoft 365 app.
  • Copilot features are not available on the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel, and web apps need third-party cookies allowed to validate the license.

If Microsoft Copilot is not working in Word, Excel or Outlook, start with the simplest cause: the button may have moved. Microsoft's support pages list a short set of other causes and fixes: a stale license, an old build, the wrong update channel, privacy settings, the wrong account and blocked cookies. This guide walks through them in the order Microsoft gives. Everything here comes from Microsoft's own support pages, which we read on October 30, 2026.

You will end up knowing which of those causes applies to you, or what to send your admin or Microsoft Support if none does. Steps for Windows come first, then Mac, web and the Outlook-specific problems.

Check whether the Copilot button moved

Microsoft says the button may not be missing at all. Copilot now opens from a single entry point, the Copilot Dynamic Action Button, which sits in the lower-right corner of the document, workbook or presentation by default. You can also move it next to the ribbon. According to Microsoft, Copilot's capabilities did not change, only how you open it.

The page, last updated in July 2026, covers Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote for Microsoft 365 on Windows and Mac. See Microsoft's guide to finding and enabling a missing Copilot button.

Fix Copilot not working on Windows

Microsoft's steps assume you have a Copilot license but see no Copilot button in any Microsoft 365 app. Copilot may also be absent if it isn't part of your subscription or if your organization's settings restrict it. Microsoft has a separate article, "What Copilot license do I have", for checking that.

  1. Install the latest Office updates. Use Microsoft's "Install Office updates" article.
  2. Refresh your license. In any Microsoft 365 app, go to File > Account and select Update License. Then close and restart all open Microsoft 365 apps.
  3. Check your update channel (business users). Copilot features are not available on the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel. You need Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel. To check, go to File > Account and read the Product Information section. Changing the channel is a job for your help desk or IT support. The web versions of the apps work without a channel change in the meantime.
  4. Check privacy settings. Go to File > Account, then under Account Privacy select Manage Settings. Turn on "Experiences that analyze your content". Scroll down and turn on "All connected experiences". If your IT department manages Microsoft 365, your admin controls these settings.

Fix Copilot not working on Mac

  1. Install the latest build. Microsoft points to its "Update Office for Mac automatically" article.
  2. Refresh your license. In any Microsoft 365 app, open the app name menu at the top of the screen, for example Word. Select About, then More Info, then Refresh License. Close open documents and restart all Microsoft 365 apps.
  3. Check privacy settings. Open Word, then go to Word > Preferences > Privacy. Turn on "Experiences that analyze your content" and "All connected experiences".

Microsoft's page does not list a channel check for Mac.

Fix Copilot not working in the web apps

Refresh the page first and see whether Copilot appears. If it doesn't, check third-party cookies. Microsoft says blocking them can stop Copilot from validating your license. Turn them back on in your browser and try again. This is common in Incognito or InPrivate windows and in some browsers, such as Safari.

Fix the license validation error

Some people see this message: "We encountered a problem validating your Copilot license." Microsoft's page on license validation errors with Copilot, last updated in February 2026, gives four causes and a fix for each.

Cause Fix
You are signed in with an account that has no Copilot license Sign in with a different account. On microsoft365.com, select your account icon, then "Sign in with a different account"
You are working on a work or school file but using Copilot from a Microsoft 365 Personal, Family or Premium subscription Sign in with your work or school account if your organization provides Copilot
The file is stored in third-party storage Move or copy the file to OneDrive or SharePoint. Microsoft says it is working on this issue
Your browser blocks third-party cookies (web apps only) Allow third-party cookies in Edge, Chrome, Firefox or Safari. The page lists the menu path for each

Fix Copilot problems in classic Outlook for Windows

Outlook has two known issues on Microsoft's support site. Both are marked fixed.

Copilot buttons missing. After classic Outlook updated to build 20026.20182 or later, the Copilot button above the ribbon and the Copilot icon in the app bar could disappear. Copilot still worked in Outlook on the web and in the Microsoft Copilot app. Microsoft says it fixed a bug that could remove the entry point when the app couldn't retrieve account information from the Outlook profile. Its workarounds were to use new Outlook or Outlook on the web, or to create a new Outlook profile. The page was last updated October 15, 2026.

Copilot Chat shows three dots. Selecting Copilot chat in the ribbon or on the app bar opened a page that showed three dots instead of the interface. Microsoft lists the fix in Current Channel version 2607 (build 20228.20190) and Monthly Enterprise Channel version 2607 (build 20228.20188). The page was last updated August 18, 2026. Microsoft's workaround:

  1. Close classic Outlook and other Office apps.
  2. Rename the folder %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Wef to wef.old.
  3. Restart classic Outlook. It recreates the folder, which makes web add-ins reload and download fresh cache data.

Also check that Apps are switched on in Outlook. Go to File > Options > Advanced, and under Outlook panes make sure "Show Apps in Outlook" is checked. Microsoft says that if it is off, Copilot may not appear in the app bar.

Run Microsoft's Copilot troubleshooters

Microsoft offers two troubleshooters, both started from the Get Help app.

  • Copilot License Troubleshooter. Use it if you think you have a license but don't see the Copilot icon. Open Get Help, search for "Copilot License Troubleshooter" and follow the steps.
  • Copilot Connectivity Troubleshooter. Use it if you have trouble connecting to Copilot. It checks for firewall rules and other things that might block the connection. Open Get Help, search for "Copilot connectivity troubleshooter" and follow the steps.

If the Copilot app itself won't load

Microsoft renamed the Microsoft 365 (Office) app to the Microsoft Copilot app on web, iOS, Android and Windows. The change began rolling out on January 15, 2025, and the web address moved to m365.cloud.microsoft. The office.com and microsoft365.com addresses redirect there. If the change doesn't show up, Microsoft says to connect to the internet and restart the app. See its page on the transition to the Microsoft Copilot app.

Eligibility matters here too. With a work or school account, Copilot Chat is included with a Microsoft 365 license, and users with a Microsoft Copilot license also have access. With a personal account, Copilot Chat comes with Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium or Pro, for primary account holders only. In regions where Copilot isn't available, the Copilot tab is removed from the Home screen.

When nothing works

If the license error is gone but Copilot still doesn't appear, Microsoft points to its "I don't see Copilot in my apps" article. Home users should contact Microsoft Support. Business users should ask their Microsoft 365 admin to confirm the Copilot license, and the admin can contact Microsoft Support.

Microsoft's pages change often. Check the dates on them if your build or channel is newer than the ones named here.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Copilot button missing in Word and Excel?

Microsoft says it may have moved to the Copilot Dynamic Action Button in the lower-right corner of the document. If it is not there, update Office, refresh your license, and check your privacy settings and update channel.

How do I refresh my Copilot license?

On Windows, go to File > Account and select Update License. On Mac, open the app menu, choose About, then More Info, then Refresh License. On both, restart all Microsoft 365 apps afterward.

Does Copilot work on the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel?

No. Microsoft says Copilot features are not available there. You need Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel, and your IT support makes that change.

What does the Copilot license validation error mean?

Microsoft lists four causes: signing in with an account that has no Copilot license, using a personal subscription on a work file, storing the file in third-party storage, and blocked third-party cookies in web apps.
