Key takeaways
- Claude Code is Anthropic's agent for software engineering, while Cowork handles non-coding knowledge work with no terminal.
- As of October 29, 2026, Claude Code is included in all paid plans, and Pro costs $20 a month or $17 billed annually.
- Anthropic's pricing page calls Cowork a rollout on Pro and Max, while its product and help pages list both as included.
Claude Code vs Cowork comes down to the kind of work you hand over. Claude Code is Anthropic's agent for software engineering, built around a terminal and your repository. Claude Cowork is the same kind of agent for everything else: research, documents, spreadsheets and files. Both come with a paid Claude plan, and as of October 29, 2026 a Pro plan at $20 a month gets you into both.
This comparison rests on Anthropic's docs, help center and product pages, not on hands-on testing. Plans and limits change, so each price below carries the date we read it.

What Claude Code does
Anthropic describes Claude Code as a tool for handing off work like a bug fix, a test or a multi-day migration, then steering and reviewing it. The docs say it reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and connects to your development tools.
It runs in several places that share one engine: the terminal, VS Code and JetBrains extensions, a desktop app, the web at claude.ai/code and the mobile apps. Settings, CLAUDE.md instructions and MCP servers (the open standard for connecting AI tools to outside data) carry across them. It works directly with git, can open pull requests, and can run in CI through GitHub Actions or GitLab CI/CD.
It is also the only one of the two you can pay for by the token. A Console account bills at standard API pricing, which matters if you want to run it in automation. For install steps, see our guide on how to install Claude Code, and for what it costs, is Claude Code free.
What Cowork does
Anthropic's help center says Cowork brings the agentic abilities of Claude Code to knowledge work beyond coding, with no terminal required. Instead of answering one prompt at a time, Claude plans and carries out a multi-step task, such as organizing files, producing a spreadsheet or slides, or synthesizing research.
Anthropic's own examples are scheduled reports, spreadsheet reconciliation, contract review and call-note analysis. Plugins bundle skills, connectors and sub-agents, and the product page lists ones for brand voice, legal and finance. Cowork can read, edit and create Word, PDF, Excel, PowerPoint, CSV and image files.
The desktop app is what lets Cowork reach local folders, a built-in browser and computer use, which is in research preview. Sessions that don't need local access run in the cloud and, according to the help center, keep running when the app is closed or the computer sleeps. Claude asks for explicit permission before permanently deleting files.
Which plans include each one
As of October 29, 2026, Claude Code is included in every paid plan. Anthropic's pricing FAQ says so, and the product page says access requires Pro or Max, Team or Enterprise, or a Console account.
Cowork is on the same paid plans, but Anthropic's pages disagree on one detail. The product page and the help center list Pro and Max as included. The pricing page carries a banner saying "Claude Cowork is now just Claude" and describes it as rolling out to Pro and Max, with more plans to follow. Team and Enterprise are listed as included. Cowork is not available on the Free plan. If you are on Pro or Max and don't see it yet, the banner is the likely reason: until the change reaches your account, Cowork appears next to Chat.
Neither product has a fixed message count. Anthropic says usage limits depend on conversation length, model and features. Cowork draws on that allowance faster than Chat, because each step of a multi-step task uses tokens, and the help center suggests grouping related work into one task and checking Settings, then Usage. Max plans give 5x or 20x Pro usage per session. Paid plans can buy extra usage at API rates after hitting a limit.
Which one to pick
Use Claude Code if the output is code in a repository: you want tests run, commits made, pull requests opened, or a script wired into CI. It is the only one with a CLI, an Agent SDK and API billing, and it supports third-party providers in the terminal, VS Code and JetBrains.
Use Cowork if the output is a document, spreadsheet, slide deck or a folder of cleaned-up files, and nobody on the task wants to open a terminal. It also fits recurring office work, such as a weekly report assembled from files and connectors.
For most paid subscribers the choice is not either-or. Both sit inside the same plan, so the practical test is which one your task needs. A developer who also writes weekly reports can use each for its own job. A team that doesn't write code gets Cowork on the Team plan, and Claude Code comes with the same seat. If you are weighing Claude Code against another coding agent instead, see our comparisons with Codex and Cursor.
What we could not confirm
Anthropic does not publish fixed usage numbers for either product, so we cannot say how many tasks a Pro plan covers. The pricing and product pages differ on whether Cowork is already on Pro and Max, and we have not tested either product. Check your own plan page before you decide.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude Cowork the same as Claude Code?
No. Anthropic's help center says Cowork uses the same underlying architecture as Claude Code but needs no terminal, and it is aimed at knowledge work such as research, documents and spreadsheets. Claude Code is aimed at software engineering.
Is Claude Cowork free?
