What happens to projects

Deleting chats does not touch your projects. Anthropic says projects and account information stay until you delete them or delete your account.

To delete a project, go to the Projects page, click the three dots in the project's upper right corner, select Delete and click "Yes, delete." Inside a project, click the three dots next to the star, select Delete and confirm. Archived projects can't be deleted, so unarchive one first. Anthropic's projects guide does not say what happens to a project's chats or files when you delete it. If you want to keep a chat, use the dropdown arrow next to its name to move it out of the project first.

How long Anthropic keeps deleted chats

Anthropic's privacy page, dated July 1, 2026, says deleted chats leave your history at once and are deleted from back-end storage within 30 days. It lists exceptions:

Case How long
Deleted chat, normal case Removed from storage within 30 days
Chat flagged by safety systems as a Usage Policy violation Inputs and outputs up to 2 years, classification scores up to 7 years
Thumbs up or down feedback and bug reports 5 years
Chats used for model training, if you allowed it De-identified, up to 5 years
Legal or dispute reasons As long as required

On training, Anthropic says that if you turn the setting off, your past and future chats are not used for future training, and deleted chats are not either. Data already inside training runs in progress, or in models already trained, stays. Incognito chats are never used for training.

Claude for Work and the API follow separate retention rules, covered in a different Anthropic article that the help center links to.

What to do next

Delete the chats you no longer want, then check your project list for old files. If you want training off, change the setting in your privacy options.

This guide is based on Anthropic's published help pages. Menu labels can differ slightly between app versions.
