Key takeaways

  • A language model has no live view of Google rankings, so a gap list from memory is a guess.
  • seogeoaeo.ai's Keyword Gap gives an agent real rows over MCP for 85 credits per call, with maxCredits to cap spend.
  • Agents handle brand filtering, grouping and brief stubs; people judge intent, read rival pages and decide what to add.

AI content gap analysis sounds like a job you can hand to a chatbot in one prompt: "what topics is my competitor ranking for that I am not?" Ask a general model that question without a data source and it will guess, confidently. The useful version splits the work. A data tool supplies the rankings, an AI agent sorts and drafts, and a person makes the calls that depend on reading pages and knowing customers. Here is where that line falls.

Why the model cannot do it alone

A language model has no live view of Google rankings. It cannot know which searches a specific site holds positions for this month, or how many people search each one. Any keyword list it produces from memory is a plausible-sounding invention. For a content plan, that is worse than no list, because it looks finished.

So the first requirement is a tool the agent can call that returns real ranking data.

The data step: a keyword gap call

One way to give an agent that data is seogeoaeo.ai, which exposes its tools over MCP and REST on every plan. Its Keyword Gap tool takes your site, one competitor and a country, and returns up to the 300 most searched keywords the competitor ranks for in Google's top 20 that your site does not rank for. Each row has estimated monthly searches, difficulty, intent and cost per click. The report also lists the competitor pages that win the most gap keywords.

Connecting it to Claude Code, Cursor, Codex or another MCP client takes a workspace API key and the endpoint https://seogeoaeo.ai/api/mcp. A call costs 85 credits, the same as running it in the browser. Two fields keep an agent's spending in bounds: maxCredits refuses any run priced above a cap, and idempotencyKey lets it retry without paying twice. Plans start at $29 a month for 2,000 credits.

What the agent does well

Once the rows are real, an agent is good at the tedious middle of the job:

  • Removing brand searches for the competitor's own name.
  • Grouping keywords by the competitor URL that ranks, so a cluster of 20 terms on one page becomes one brief instead of 20 posts.
  • Cross-checking your own site. Given access to your content folder or sitemap, it can flag topics you already cover. Those terms are not missing, they are weak, and a new page would compete with the old one.
  • Drafting brief skeletons with a main keyword, related keywords and the competitor page to study.

What still needs a person

The source of most bad gap-driven content is skipping the judgment steps. Three stay with people.

Intent. Whether someone typing a search would ever buy what you sell. The agent can read an intent label, but a person who knows the customers should look at the actual results page. High volume with the wrong audience is worth nothing.

The competitor page. Someone should read the rival page that wins the most gap terms, not a summary of it. The details that make a page rank, such as a calculator, a worked example, or a format, are easy for a summary to flatten.

The addition. Every brief needs a line on what your page will offer that theirs does not: data from your product, an example from your customers, a step they skip. An agent can suggest candidates. Only the team knows which are true.

Blind spots of the data itself

The gap tool covers one competitor per call and only keywords you do not rank for at all. It does not return keywords where you both rank and you trail, does not read your Search Console, and does not show which keywords a competitor bids on in Google Ads. Volumes and difficulty are estimates. For your measured positions, Google Search Console's Performance report shows queries, clicks, impressions and average position for your own verified site.

Teams that compare several rivals at once may prefer Semrush's Keyword Gap, which handles up to five domains and labels weak and untapped terms too. Semrush lists MCP access on its $199 Starter plan.

A workable division of labor

  1. Agent calls the gap tool for your closest search rival, capped with maxCredits.
  2. Agent drops brand terms, groups by competitor URL and flags topics you already cover.
  3. Person reviews intent and reads the top competitor pages.
  4. Agent drafts brief stubs; person writes the "what we add" line.

That keeps the AI on the counting and sorting, and the people on the decisions. The full tool reference for agents lists the inputs and prices.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT or Claude do a content gap analysis?

Not reliably on their own, because they cannot see current rankings. Connected to a ranking data tool over MCP, an agent can pull and sort a real gap list.

What should stay with a person in AI content gap analysis?

Judging whether searchers would buy from you, reading the competitor page in full, and deciding what your page will add that theirs lacks.
