Key takeaways
- SpyFu GPT puts SpyFu's data in ChatGPT; seogeoaeo.ai's MCP server works with any MCP client.
- Agents can cap each run with maxCredits and avoid double charges with idempotencyKey.
- No agent can learn a rival's bid keywords or spend for certain, because Google does not publish them.
SpyFu now sells part of its pitch through ChatGPT. Its home page promotes SpyFu GPT, which it says turns ChatGPT into a marketing results engine backed by SpyFu's search data. That is useful if ChatGPT is where you work. If your AI work happens in Claude Code, Cursor, Codex or another MCP client, you need a SpyFu GPT alternative that speaks MCP, and seogeoaeo.ai is built for that. This explainer covers how the two approaches differ and what an agent can and cannot learn about a competitor.
Two ways to put competitor data in front of a model
A custom GPT. SpyFu's demo shows ChatGPT answering a question like "How can I improve my website?" by calling SpyFu's API and quoting metrics such as organic clicks and keyword counts. The data stays SpyFu's, the interface is ChatGPT, and the model chooses what to fetch.
An MCP server. The Model Context Protocol lets any compatible client call outside tools. seogeoaeo.ai runs one at https://seogeoaeo.ai/api/mcp. Each of its checks is an MCP tool with a fixed credit price. Claude Code, Cursor, Codex or a custom agent connects with an API key and calls the tools it needs.
The practical difference is portability. A GPT lives in one chat product. An MCP server works with any client that supports the protocol, including agents that run in your terminal or on a schedule.
What the agent can ask for
These seogeoaeo.ai tools cover the core of what SpyFu users research:
| Agent question | MCP tool | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| What Google ads is this rival running, and which has it kept longest? | competitor-google-ads |
15 |
| Which searches does it rank for? | competitor-keywords |
35 |
| What does it rank for that we do not? | keyword-gap |
85 |
| Who are our real search competitors? | competitor-finder |
38 |
| How big is this site in search? | domain-overview |
50 |
| What is it running on Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn? | meta-ad-finder, linkedin-ad-finder |
5 each |
Two arguments make this safer for an autonomous agent. maxCredits refuses any run above a price you set, and idempotencyKey stops a retry from being charged twice. Agent runs cost the same as runs in the browser, and the free check-credits tool lets the agent see its balance before it starts.
Plans start at $29 a month for 2,000 credits, with MCP and REST included on every plan. The agent setup page has the connection steps.
What no model can find out
Agents are good at turning reports into plans, but they cannot conjure data that does not exist. Three limits apply to every tool here, SpyFu's included:
- Bid keywords. Google does not publish the keywords an advertiser bids on. SpyFu offers an estimated list; seogeoaeo.ai does not offer one at all. An agent that tells you "your rival bids on X" is reporting an estimate at best.
- Spend and performance. Clicks, budgets and conversion rates for someone else's ads are not public. Traffic and cost figures in any tool are modelled.
- History. seogeoaeo.ai's ads tool samples the 100 most recently shown ads and reads the copy of up to ten text ads. SpyFu says it keeps 18 years and more of history, including competitors' ad tests. If your agent needs to reason about how a rival's messaging changed over years, that history is where SpyFu stays ahead.
A well-behaved agent should say which numbers are estimates. seogeoaeo.ai helps here: every tool's documentation lists what it does not do, and each successful run returns a plain-text summary and a prioritized tip list the model can quote.
Which one to pick
Choose SpyFu GPT if your team already lives in ChatGPT and pays for SpyFu for its PPC history, rank tracking and client reports. We could not load SpyFu's pricing page, so check spyfu.com for what that costs.
Choose seogeoaeo.ai if you want a coding agent or a scheduled script to pull a rival's ads and keywords on demand, from any MCP client, at a price per call you can cap. For most teams that look at competitors a few times a quarter, that is the cheaper and more flexible setup.
Frequently asked questions
What is SpyFu GPT?
A ChatGPT integration SpyFu promotes on its home page, which calls SpyFu's data to answer marketing questions.
Can Claude Code do competitor research?
Yes, through an MCP server. seogeoaeo.ai's server at https://seogeoaeo.ai/api/mcp exposes competitor ads, keyword and gap tools priced per call.
How much does it cost to run competitor reports from an agent?
The same as in the browser: 15 credits for Google ads, 35 for organic keywords and 85 for a keyword gap, on plans from $29 a month for 2,000 credits.
