## Key takeaways

- Apple's steps are to update to the 27 release, open Settings, tap Siri, then tap Try Siri AI (Beta).
- Siri AI needs a supported device, the same supported language on the device and in Siri, an eligible Apple Account region, and a user aged 13 or older.
- Apple says high demand can put you on a waitlist, and that daily usage limits reset after a time out.

How to turn on Siri AI: update to iOS 27 or the matching 27 release, open Settings, tap Siri, then tap Try Siri AI (Beta). Apple's [Siri AI setup page](https://support.apple.com/en-us/127893) gives those steps. If the option is missing or Siri AI won't work, the cause is usually the device, the language, the region or a waitlist, and this guide covers each one. Everything here is from Apple's support pages, read on November 4, 2026.

Siri AI is still labeled a beta. For dates and pricing, see our report on the [Siri AI release date and whether it is free](https://claudegpt.si/news/siri-ai-release-date-is-it-free).

## What you need before you turn on Siri AI

Apple lists these requirements on its [Siri AI page](https://support.apple.com/en-us/127893):

- **Software:** iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, visionOS 27 or watchOS 27.
- **Language:** the device language and the Siri language must be the same, and one of English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese or Spanish.
- **Apple Account:** its region must be eligible.
- **Age:** Siri AI is not available to users under 13.
- **Device:** one of the models below.

| Device | Models Apple lists |
| --- | --- |
| iPhone | iPhone 15 Pro or later, iPhone 16 or later, iPhone Air and iPhone Duo |
| iPad | iPad mini (A17 Pro) and iPad with M1 or later |
| Mac | MacBook Neo (A18 Pro) and Mac with M1 or later |
| Apple Watch | Series 9 or later, Ultra 2 or later and SE 3, paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone that has Siri AI turned on |
| Apple Vision Pro | All models |

Apple's [Apple Intelligence page](https://support.apple.com/en-us/121115) adds a storage note: up to 14 GB on the newest hardware and up to 8 GB on other supported models, and up to 1.5 GB on Apple Watch. It also says changing the Siri language can make Apple Intelligence unavailable until the new language finishes downloading.

## How to turn on Siri AI

Apple gives one set of steps for all devices:

1. Update your device to iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, visionOS 27 or watchOS 27.
2. Go to Settings, then tap or click Siri.
3. Tap or click Try Siri AI (Beta). If Siri is off, tap or click Turn On Siri first.
4. Follow the onscreen steps to pick a voice, complete voice enrollment and review your privacy settings.

Siri AI then downloads automatically. During high demand you might be placed on a waitlist, and Apple says wait times vary.

Apple's page doesn't give separate steps for Mac, iPad, Apple Watch or Vision Pro. It also doesn't say how to turn Siri AI off or switch back to the earlier Siri.

## How to check which Siri you have

Apple's [Siri overview](https://support.apple.com/en-us/105020) says to look in Settings under Siri, or Apple Intelligence & Siri on some software. It describes three versions:

- **Siri AI (Beta):** the logo shows "beta."
- **Siri with Apple Intelligence (Siri Classic):** used when Apple Intelligence is on and Siri AI is not enabled.
- **Siri:** used on Apple TV, HomePod and other devices without Apple Intelligence, in regions without Apple Intelligence, or when Apple Intelligence is off.

Apple Watch uses the same Siri version as its paired iPhone.

## How to start Siri AI once it is on

Apple lists these ways in its [Siri AI launch post](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/09/siri-ai-a-profoundly-more-capable-and-personal-assistant-is-here/) and the Siri overview:

- Say "Hey Siri."
- On iPhone, press the side button or swipe down from the Dynamic Island.
- On iPad and Mac, use Spotlight. On Mac you can also press Command-Space.
- On Vision Pro, look at the 3D Siri visualization and speak.

Typing is always available with Siri AI. On iPhone and iPad, swipe down from the center of the screen. On Mac, press Command-Space. Type to Siri isn't available with Siri AI on Apple Watch.

## Siri AI not working: what to check

Start with the causes in Apple's Siri AI requirements, since they are the most common reason the option never appears.

1. **Software version.** Siri AI needs the 27 release of your operating system. Update first.
2. **Language.** Set the device language and the Siri language to the same one of the six supported languages. Apple says Traditional Chinese, Norwegian, Turkish and Vietnamese are coming by the end of 2026, per its [October post on new languages](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/10/siri-ai-is-available-in-more-languages-starting-today/).
3. **Region.** Siri AI is not available in the EU on iOS, iPadOS or watchOS. It works on macOS 27 and visionOS 27 if your Apple Account region is in the EU. It does not currently work if your Apple Account region is in mainland China.
4. **Device.** Check your model against the table above.
5. **Waitlist.** If setup finishes and Siri AI hasn't arrived, you may be waiting for the download during high demand.
6. **Usage limits.** Siri AI has daily usage limits. Apple's [usage limits page](https://support.apple.com/en-us/127901) says a feature that reaches its limit becomes available again after a time out. Apple adds that the limits vary by feature, request complexity and system demand. See also Apple's [Apple Intelligence usage terms](https://support.apple.com/148587).

If Siri itself is not responding, Apple's [iPhone and iPad troubleshooting page](https://support.apple.com/en-us/105037) lists these steps:

1. Check your internet connection. If Siri says "I'm having trouble with the connection," the device is offline.
2. Open Settings, tap Siri, then tap Turn On Siri and follow the setup.
3. Go to Settings > Siri > Requests, or Apple Intelligence & Siri > Talk & Type to Siri on some versions. Turn "Siri" or "Hey Siri" off, then on again.
4. When the setup screen appears, tap Continue, say each command shown, then tap Done. This retrains the voice recognition.
5. If Siri ignores your voice, type to Siri or press a button instead.
6. If you can't hear Siri, go to Settings > Siri > Responses and tap Prefer Spoken Responses.
7. Update the device software.
8. If Siri disappears from Settings after a restart, check your VPN settings. Apple says some VPN profiles may block it.

Apple has separate articles for [Mac](https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/if-siri-doesnt-work-as-expected-mchl4e4b758d/mac), [Apple Watch](https://support.apple.com/en-us/105026) and [HomePod](https://support.apple.com/en-us/105031).

## What Apple doesn't say

Apple's pages give no fix for a Siri AI download that stays stuck, no waitlist length and no way to turn Siri AI off. If none of the steps above work, Apple's Siri AI page says to contact Apple Support.
