How each one works with your documents

In Gemini Notebook you create a notebook and add sources: PDFs, Google Docs, web pages, YouTube videos, audio and more. Each notebook is separate. Chat answers come from those sources, and each answer carries citations that quote the passage used. Google's help page says that if you ask for something outside your sources, such as a creative rewrite, the chat may say it can't answer. Chat can also run web searches or code without sources, but Google labels those features experimental and tells users to double-check the results.

Claude works differently. You can attach files to a chat, or put them in a Project. A Project has a knowledge base that every chat in it can use, plus instructions you set once. Claude's help center says that on paid plans, Claude switches on retrieval mode (RAG) when project knowledge nears the context window, which expands how much a project can hold. Project files are capped at 30 MB each, with text extracted from them.

Limits and what each plan gets

Gemini Notebook's limits depend on your Google plan. Notebooks per user and sources per notebook go from 100 and 50 on the free Standard plan to 500 and up to 600 on Ultra. Chat and studio usage is compute-based. Google says the quota refreshes every five hours and a weekly limit also applies, with AI Plus at 2x the standard limit, AI Pro at 4x, and AI Ultra at 5x or 20x the Pro limit.

Claude's free plan allows up to five Projects with limited usage. Pro adds research and Claude Code and, per the pricing page, 1x usage every five hours. Max at $100 a month gives 5x that. Claude's pricing page lists a context window of up to 1M tokens, varying by model.

Google's pages we read for this comparison do not show a price for the Google AI plans, so we don't quote one. Check the Google AI plans page for your region. For more on tiers, see our guide to whether NotebookLM is free.

Which one fits which job

Gemini Notebook fits when the job is to learn from a fixed pile of material. Its audio overviews, flashcards and quizzes are built into the product, and the citations make it easy to check a claim against the source. Our walkthrough on how to use NotebookLM covers the steps.

Claude fits when the job goes beyond the documents: drafting, analysis that needs general knowledge, code, or work that moves between tools. Custom connectors let Claude reach other software, and Anthropic's help center says free users are limited to one.

The two overlap on summarizing and questioning a document, and both have a free tier, so trying one source set in each is cheap.

What we don't know

Neither company publishes a head-to-head benchmark, and we found no independent test of the two on the same documents. The free-tier daily quotas for Gemini Notebook chat and audio were not listed on the pages we read. Claude's free usage is described only as "limited". Both products change their limits often, so check the linked pages before you commit to one.

Frequently asked questions

Is NotebookLM still called NotebookLM?

No. Google renamed it Gemini Notebook on July 16, 2026, and calls it the same standalone product.

Is Gemini Notebook free?

Yes. The Standard plan is free and allows 100 notebooks per user and 50 sources per notebook, according to Google's help page. Paid Google AI plans raise those limits.

Can Claude replace NotebookLM?

For asking questions about your documents, Claude Projects can do much of the job. It does not have Gemini Notebook's built-in Audio Overviews, flashcards or quizzes, and the help pages we read do not describe fixed passage citations.

How many files can Claude read at once?

In a chat, Claude accepts up to 20 files of up to 500 MB each. Project files are limited to 30 MB each, and the total must fit the context window.
