## Key takeaways

- Midjourney has four paid plans, $10 to $120 a month, with 15, 30 and 60 Fast GPU hours on Standard, Pro and Mega, and no free tier.
- ChatGPT includes images from Free (limited) to Pro, with Plus at $20 a month, but OpenAI publishes no exact image counts.
- Midjourney V8.2 and its Edit Model target image work; ChatGPT edits by conversation and now makes GIFs with Images 2.6.

Midjourney vs ChatGPT for image generation comes down to how you pay. Midjourney sells GPU time on four paid plans from $10 to $120 a month, with no free tier. ChatGPT bundles images into its chat plans, from a limited free tier to Plus at $20 a month, and does not publish an exact image count for any of them. Prices and limits below are as of November 6, 2026.

Pick Midjourney if images are the job and you want to know what you get for your money. Pick ChatGPT if you already pay for it and want to edit an image by talking to it. The details follow.

The Midjourney figures are from [Midjourney's pricing page](https://www.midjourney.com/pricing) as we recorded them on November 5 in our [Midjourney pricing guide](https://claudegpt.si/news/midjourney-pricing-plans-gpu-time). The page blocks automated readers, so we checked the plan names, prices and Fast hours again against search listings of the page, and they match. ChatGPT's plan lines are from [OpenAI's pricing page](https://chatgpt.com/pricing), and the dollar prices from [OpenAI's plan pricing documentation](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/pricing).

## How much you can make on each

Midjourney counts GPU time. Its pricing page says a typical image prompt uses about one minute of Fast time. By that rule of thumb, 15 Fast hours on Standard is around 900 image prompts a month. Basic has limited Fast time, about 200 image jobs a month, and no Relax mode. From Standard up, you can keep generating images in Relax mode after Fast time runs out, at a slower pace.

ChatGPT does not give a number. OpenAI's pricing page words it by plan:

- Free: "Limited image creation"
- Go: "More image creation"
- Plus: "More complex and accurate image creation"
- Pro: "Unlimited and faster image creation", subject to abuse guardrails

OpenAI's help center says only that image creation has its own usage limit on the free tier, and that limits for Images 2.5 did not change. Forum posts and blogs quote figures such as a few images a day on Free, but those are user reports, not OpenAI's numbers, and we left them out. If you need a predictable monthly volume, Midjourney is the one that tells you the budget.

## What each one is good at

**Midjourney** is a dedicated image tool. Its default model is V8.2, released on July 24, 2026, which Midjourney says focuses on aesthetics, image quality and personalization. It has personalization profiles built from your ratings, style references and moodboards. Its [Edit Model](https://updates.midjourney.com/edit-model-for-v8/), announced August 27, 2026, edits images from text instructions, takes up to four image references at once, and does inpainting (changing part of an image) and outpainting (extending the canvas). It replaces the older omni-reference feature. Midjourney also makes video; see the plan table in our pricing guide for who gets what.

**ChatGPT** makes images inside a conversation. OpenAI's release notes say Images 2.0 came on April 21, 2026, and added images with thinking on paid plans, where the model reasons before it draws. The pricing page lists that for Plus and Pro, not for Free or Go. Images 2.5 followed on September 8. The newest model, Images 2.6, is rolling out now and can make animated GIFs, as we covered in [ChatGPT can now make animated GIFs](https://claudegpt.si/news/chatgpt-gifs-images-2-6). Since you edit by chatting, follow-up changes ("make the sky darker, add text") need no special syntax.

## Which one costs less

- Under $10 a month: ChatGPT Go at $8, or Midjourney Basic at $10 if you pay monthly (the Basic yearly price works out to $8 a month).
- Around $20 to $30: ChatGPT Plus at $20 also covers chat, writing and coding. Midjourney Standard at $30 covers images and video only, with Relax mode.
- Heavy use: Midjourney Pro at $60 and Mega at $120 give 30 and 60 Fast hours plus private Stealth mode. ChatGPT Pro starts at $100 a month and is built for much more than images.

If you build apps, the API is a separate bill. OpenAI's [image generation docs](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/image-generation) list GPT Image 2.6 output at $30 per million tokens, and its 2.5 models at the same rate. The cost per image depends on quality and size. Midjourney's pricing page covers its site and Discord plans only.

## What we could not confirm

OpenAI's help center pages were closed to our reader, so the per-plan image counts for ChatGPT remain unconfirmed beyond the wording above. We also did not run the same prompts through both tools, so this comparison covers plans, prices, limits and documented features, not image quality. It is based on the products' own pages and release notes. Check both pricing pages before you subscribe, because both companies change plans often.
