Micron stock fell 17.46% on Thursday, November 5, closing at $656.39 against $795.23 the day before, according to Yahoo Finance. The drop came in an AI-driven sell-off after the U.S. midterm elections, and no Micron-specific announcement appears in the sources we read.
Why Micron stock fell
CNBC's market report says the sell-off was led by AI-related stocks. Traders worried that Democratic wins in the House and Senate, and in governor races such as Texas, could slow data center construction. Tighter data-center rules would cut demand for AI chips and memory, which is Micron's main growth story.
The move was broad. CNBC reports that AMD also fell 17%, Nvidia 9% and CoreWeave 10%. The Nasdaq Composite fell 5.5% and entered correction territory, more than 10% below its recent high. The S&P 500 lost 4.4% and the Dow fell 3.4%. CNBC says all 11 S&P 500 sectors closed lower, in the worst one-day performance for the three averages since April 2025.
Our earlier coverage covers the same day: Nvidia stock is down 8.6% and AMD stock is down 12%.
Asia sold memory stocks again on Friday
CNBC reports that memory and chip names fell further in Asia on November 6: Kioxia dropped nearly 10%, SK Hynix more than 8% and Samsung 7%. TSMC slid 9.6%. South Korea's Kospi fell more than 8% and triggered circuit breakers, and Japan's Nikkei 225 entered a bear market.
Yahoo Finance showed an overnight price of $684.90 for Micron, up 4.34%, from a thin overnight venue (Blue Ocean ATS), as of 1:54 a.m. Eastern on November 6. That is not a regular-session price.
What we don't know yet
The market blamed policy fears, not Micron's results. Nothing in the sources says Micron's orders, prices or guidance changed. Whether data-center rules actually tighten is not known: the reports describe worry, not a law. Micron's next move will depend on whether Friday's Asian sell-off carries into U.S. trading.
