Key takeaways

  • Instagram post notifications are switched on per account from the profile's Notifications option, only for accounts you follow, with a choice of posts, stories, reels and live videos.
  • Instagram has no alert for new posts on a hashtag or a keyword; AyeWatch sends those with no Instagram login, from a free preview and paid plans at $9 a month.
  • AyeWatch cannot watch an individual Instagram profile yet, so the in-app bell stays the tool for one person's posts.

Instagram post notifications are set one account at a time: open the profile of someone you follow, tap Notifications and pick Posts, Stories, Reels or Live videos. For new posts on a hashtag or a keyword, Instagram offers no alert, and that is where AyeWatch comes in, with no Instagram login needed.

How to turn on post notifications for one account

Instagram's help center gives these steps for its Android and iOS apps, as of November 2026:

  1. Open the Instagram app and go to the profile of an account you follow.
  2. Tap Notifications on that profile.
  3. Choose the kinds you want: Posts, Stories, Reels or Live videos.

The same help pages add three details. The setting only exists for accounts you follow, and it is per profile, so ten accounts means ten visits. The person is not told when you switch their notifications on or off. And Instagram may still send a push when someone you follow posts for the first time in a while, even if you never turned on their bell.

General notification settings, including a pause button, live under More, Settings, Notifications and Push notifications on the web version.

What the bell does not cover

The bell follows a person. It is no help when the thing you care about is a subject, for example:

  • every new post on a hashtag, such as a campaign tag or a niche tag like #streetphotography
  • new reels about a product, a place or a style, whether or not they carry a tag
  • people you have not found yet, or would rather not follow

Browsing the hashtag page is a weak workaround. Instagram's help center says the order of posts in its search results can depend on when a post was shared, how people engage with it and whether it meets the Recommendation Guidelines, so the newest post is not always first.

Alerts for hashtags and keywords with AyeWatch

AyeWatch checks public Instagram content on a schedule and sends you what is new. It has two Instagram sources:

Source What you enter What you are told about
Hashtag One tag, like #streetphotography New posts on the tag, oldest to newest
Search Plain words, like street photography Reels from the past week that match and that you have not seen

You never connect an Instagram account. Each alert carries the captions and links to the posts, and a check that finds several posts sends them together as one alert. To cut noise, add an Only alert me about rule in plain English, such as film cameras only, and AI reads each new post and drops the ones that do not fit.

Alerts show up in your AyeWatch feed and as push on the web, iOS and Android apps. Paid plans add email, Slack, Discord and webhooks. There is a free preview with no card, and paid plans start at $9 a month.

Set one up in three steps

  1. Open Create a monitor, choose Instagram, then Hashtag or Search.
  2. Type the tag or the words.
  3. Leave the pace on Auto, which checks more often while a tag is busy and less when it is quiet, or set your own schedule, then pick where alerts go.

Limits to know first

AyeWatch cannot watch a single Instagram profile yet, so for one person's posts the bell above is still the right tool. It reads public posts only, never Stories or comments. On a very large hashtag, Instagram's own search decides what comes back, so not every post will appear. It does not chart reach or likes either.

Which one to use

Use Instagram's bell when you want every post from a few people you already follow. Use AyeWatch when you care about a topic rather than a person, or want the alerts in Slack or email instead of the Instagram app. A good first test is a free AyeWatch preview on one hashtag you currently check by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get Instagram post notifications without following the account?

Not inside Instagram: its setting is for accounts you follow. AyeWatch cannot watch a single profile yet either; it covers hashtags and keyword searches, without an Instagram account.

Does someone know if I turn on post notifications for them?

No. Instagram's help center says people aren't notified when you turn notifications on or off for them.

Can I get notified when a hashtag gets a new post?

Instagram itself has no hashtag alert. An AyeWatch Hashtag monitor sends new public posts on a tag to your feed and phone, and on paid plans to email, Slack or a webhook.
