Key takeaways
- For a site you own, analytics and Google Search Console give measured numbers.
- For any other site, tools model traffic, mostly organic Google visits from rankings, volumes and click rates.
- Calibrate an estimator by running your own site through it and comparing with your Search Console clicks.
How to check website traffic, in one line: for your own site, open your analytics and Google Search Console, which count real visits; for anyone else's site, use a traffic estimator and read its figure as a comparison, not a count.
If you want that estimate for any domain in under a minute, seogeoaeo.ai's Domain Overview returns estimated monthly Google visits, ranking keywords by position and link data for 50 credits a run.
Can I see another website's exact traffic?
No. Exact visit counts live in the site owner's analytics, and only the owner can read them. Every outside tool gives you a model. Ranking-based tools model organic Google visits from keyword positions, search volumes and typical click rates. Some vendors, such as Similarweb, also use panel and partner data, according to its data page. None of them can see inside a site that has not shared its analytics.
Where do I find exact numbers for my own site?
Two places.
- Your analytics tool, such as GA4, Plausible or Matomo, or your server logs. They split sessions by channel: organic, direct, social, referral, email and paid.
- Google Search Console, whose Performance report lists clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position per query and page, for Google Search only.
Expect their totals to differ. Analytics misses people who block scripts or refuse cookies, and Search Console counts clicks, not sessions.
How does a traffic estimator get its number?
It lists the keywords a domain ranks for in Google, looks up how often each is searched, and multiplies by the share of clicks a result at that position usually wins. Then it adds everything up.
A quick illustration: third place on a phrase with 10,000 monthly searches, at about a 10% click share, gives 1,000 modeled visits.
Each part of that sum is itself approximate, so the errors stack.
What does an estimate miss?
Direct visits, social, email, newsletters and visits from AI assistants such as ChatGPT or Perplexity. Branded searches tend to come out low. Paid clicks, if shown at all, are a separate ad estimate. A business that lives on its brand and newsletter can look small in a checker and still be large.
How accurate is the estimate?
Check it against yourself. Run your own domain in the same tool and country on the same day, and compare it with your Search Console clicks. If the tool says 4,000 and Search Console says 6,000, you know the tool reads low for sites like yours by about a third. Apply the same correction to the rival in your head.
What should I look at besides the total?
- The trend. A doubling over six months means the site won rankings.
- Position bands. Most clicks go to the top three. Domain Overview splits ranking keywords into first place, positions 2 to 3, 4 to 10 and lower, so you can see whether a big keyword count is mostly page two.
- One vendor at a time. Different tools use different inputs. Never set one tool's figure against another's.
Is there a free option?
Ahrefs offers a free website traffic checker for organic estimates. On seogeoaeo.ai you need a plan, starting at $29 a month for 2,000 credits, but you only spend credits on the runs you make, and a failed run costs nothing.
Does a traffic checker count AI or social visits?
No. A ranking-based checker only models organic Google search, so ChatGPT referrals, social clicks and newsletter visits are missing from its total. You can count those on your own site in analytics; on someone else's, nobody outside the company can.
Which keywords bring the traffic?
Domain Overview gives totals only. To see the keywords behind them, run Competitor Keywords on the same domain for 35 credits.
