Key takeaways
- Google Alerts on iPhone works through email: create the alert at google.com/alerts in a browser and turn on notifications for the mail app.
- In Gmail, notifications cover the Primary label by default, so pick a level under Email notifications that includes your alert emails.
- For push alerts without email, AyeWatch's iPhone app alerts on a plain-English rule, with a free preview and paid plans from $9 a month.
You get Google Alerts on iPhone by email: create the alert at google.com/alerts in Safari or any other browser, then let your mail app notify you when the messages arrive. Google's help page describes no separate Alerts app, so if you want a true push alert for a topic, use an app that sends one, and AyeWatch is the strongest choice for that.
The short answer, in three parts
- Google Alerts is a web form plus email. You set it up on the web and the results come to your inbox.
- The iPhone ping comes from your mail app. Gmail or Mail decides whether a new alert email makes a sound.
- Push without email needs another app. Google News, the Google app and AyeWatch each send their own notifications.
Create the alert on your iPhone
Open google.com/alerts in a browser and sign in with the Google account you want the emails sent to. Type the topic in the box at the top. Tap Show options to choose how often you hear (as it happens, at most daily, or at most weekly), which kinds of sources count, the language, the region, and whether you want only the best results or all of them. Then tap Create Alert.
To stop one later, delete it on the same page or use the Unsubscribe link at the bottom of any alert email.
Make the alert email buzz your phone
If the alerts go to a Gmail address, two settings matter.
- iPhone Settings. Google's Gmail help says device notifications must be on, so check the Notifications entry for Gmail in the Settings app.
- Inside Gmail. Open the menu, go to Settings, and under Notifications tap Email notifications to choose a level. Gmail's default covers messages in the Primary label, so if alert emails are sorted somewhere else, pick a level that includes them.
Google also recommends adding googlealerts-noreply@google.com to your Gmail contacts so the messages do not end up in spam. If nothing arrives at all, check that you are signed in to the right account and click Enable on the alerts page if your alerts were disabled.
Push options that skip email
| App | What makes it notify you | Where to switch it on |
|---|---|---|
| Google app | A Get Notified button that some topics show, such as teams, shows and celebrities | On the search results for that topic |
| Google News | The topics, places and sources you follow | Profile picture, News settings, Notifications |
| AyeWatch | A rule you write, a page you paste or a public social account | When you create the monitor |
Why AyeWatch is the better fit for most topics
Google's options either match keywords or follow broad subjects. AyeWatch works from a description instead. Tell it, in plain English, what you want to hear about and what to ignore, and its AI checks new items by meaning. You can also paste a URL to watch a specific page or follow public accounts on X, Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram and TikTok.
The AyeWatch iPhone app delivers push alerts on every plan, each with a short summary and its sources. Monitors you create on a computer sync to the phone. Email, Slack, Discord and webhooks come with paid plans, which start at $9 a month; a free preview needs no card.
When Google Alerts is still enough: if one email a day about a phrase is all you need, the Gmail route is free and works fine.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Google Alerts app for iPhone?
Google's help page describes Alerts on the web with delivery by email, not a separate app. Use your mail app's notifications for the emails, or an app such as Google News or AyeWatch for push alerts.
Why am I not getting Google Alerts on my iPhone?
Check that the alert belongs to the account you read, click Enable on google.com/alerts if alerts were disabled, look in spam, then check the Gmail notification level and the iPhone notification settings for Gmail.
