## Key takeaways

- AI Mode lives inside Google Search and answers with web links, while the Gemini app is a standalone assistant for tasks and files.
- Per Google's help page, Gemini 4 Argon in AI Mode needs a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription and has daily limits.
- Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month and AI Plus $4.99 on Google's subscriptions page as of October 31, 2026.

Google AI Mode and the Gemini app are two different products that share a model family. AI Mode is a part of Google Search that answers a question and points you to web links. The Gemini app is a standalone assistant you chat with, give files and tasks, and connect to other apps. This comparison of Google AI Mode vs Gemini is based on Google's own [AI Mode help page](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/16011537), its [Gemini Apps help page](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/13278668) and its [subscriptions page](https://gemini.google/subscriptions/).

Pick AI Mode when you are researching something and want sources. Pick the Gemini app when you want to produce something, keep a long conversation going or hand off a multi-step job. The line is blurring, and the table below shows where.

## Google AI Mode vs Gemini app at a glance

| | AI Mode in Google Search | Gemini app |

| How it works | "Query fan-out": splits a question into subtopics and runs the searches at once, then combines the results | Chat with features such as Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gems |

## What AI Mode does

Google describes AI Mode as an extension of AI Overviews with more advanced reasoning. It launched on March 5, 2025 as an opt-in Labs experiment, according to [Google's launch post](https://blog.google/products/search/ai-mode-search/). It draws on Google's search systems, and Google says it falls back to a set of web links when it lacks confidence in an AI answer.

You can type, speak or add images, PDFs and other files, and ask follow-ups. Google's help page also lists interactive visuals such as calculators and diagrams (English only, signed-in users), adding Chrome tabs to a question, and a history you can delete. It warns that AI Mode can misread content, so check anything important.

Ads are part of it. On October 28, Google said it is expanding ads in AI Mode to 10 more countries, as we covered in [ads in AI Mode reach 10 more countries](https://claudegpt.si/news/ads-in-ai-mode-10-more-countries).

## What the Gemini app does

The [Gemini Apps help page](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/13278668) describes it as direct access to Google AI for writing, planning and learning. Per Google's [subscriptions page](https://gemini.google/subscriptions/), even the free plan includes image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gems.

Google's [October 13 release notes](https://gemini.google/release-notes/) add a Customize option that connects Gemini to more than 40 apps, and say Google Antigravity, a coding agent, is now built into the Gemini macOS app. None of that is part of Search.

## What each one costs

As seen on Google's subscriptions page on October 31, 2026 (prices in US dollars per month, and the page shows no date of its own):

| Plan | Price | Gemini app | Search |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free | $0 | Flash-Lite model, 15 GB storage | Not listed on the page |
| Google AI Plus | $4.99 | Flash model, 2x the free usage limits | More Nano Banana access |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99 | Gemini 4 Argon, 4x the free usage limits | Higher access to Gemini 4 Argon and agentic features |
| Google AI Ultra | From $99.99 | Highest access to Gemini 4 Argon | Not itemized separately |

The help page does not say AI Mode itself needs a subscription. It says the Gemini 4 Argon option inside it does, and that Argon in AI Mode is limited to a shorter list of countries than AI Mode itself.

## Where they overlap

Both can run Gemini 4 Argon, both can pull in your Gmail and Calendar, and both take files. The difference is the starting point. AI Mode starts from a search and ends at sources. Gemini starts from a conversation and ends at an output or an action. A Google AI Pro subscription gives access to the top model in both.

For how Google's plans stack up against Microsoft's, see [Gemini vs Copilot: plans, prices and which one fits you](https://claudegpt.si/news/gemini-vs-copilot).

Google's pages do not compare the two directly, and none of the pages we read give independent benchmark results for AI Mode against the app. This comparison rests on Google's documentation, so features and country lists may change. Check the linked pages for your country.
