Key takeaways

  • On an individual plan, github.com/settings/billing then AI usage shows included credits used, extra usage and credits per model.
  • Copilot has billed in GitHub AI Credits since June 1, 2026, at $0.01 per credit, and the allowance resets at 00:00 UTC on the first of each month.
  • The docs describe a per-model breakdown, not a per-token one.

To check your GitHub Copilot usage, go to github.com/settings/billing and click AI usage in the sidebar. As of October 29, 2026, that page shows how many of your included AI credits you have used, any extra usage beyond your plan, and a per-model breakdown, according to GitHub's guide to monitoring AI usage.

If you came looking for "premium requests", that unit is mostly gone. Since June 1, 2026, Copilot bills in GitHub AI Credits, so the screens below count credits, not requests. This guide is for Copilot users who want to know what they have left before the month ends.

What Copilot usage is measured in

GitHub's docs say each interaction uses input tokens (what is sent to the model), output tokens (what the model writes) and cached tokens (context reused or stored). Each is priced by the model you used, and the total converts to AI credits at 1 credit = $0.01. A $10 budget covers 1,000 credits.

Code completions and next edit suggestions do not use credits. Chat and agent work does, including agent mode, code review, Copilot in the cloud and Copilot CLI, according to the Copilot plans page.

Your allowance resets at 00:00:00 UTC on the first day of each calendar month, not on your billing date. Unused credits do not roll over.

How to see your usage on GitHub.com

Copilot Individual

  1. Go to github.com/settings/billing.
  2. Click AI usage in the sidebar.
  3. Read the included credits used, the additional usage beyond your plan, the chart of models used, and the per-model table of credits and cost.

The AI usage page is only available on individual plans. There is a quicker view too: click your profile picture, choose Copilot settings, and look under Usage for the current billing period.

Copilot Business or Enterprise

  1. Click your profile picture in the upper right, then Copilot settings.
  2. Under Usage, read Usage this cycle.

If a user-level budget applies, it shows credits used against your total, such as "450 / 1,000 AI credits used". Without one, it shows the total used this cycle. If you run out, a banner lets you ask your administrator for more budget.

The billing overview

The Overview page at github.com/settings/billing also has a Metered usage area. Click Copilot there to filter it to Copilot only.

How to see your usage in your editor

Click the Copilot icon, then:

Editor Where
Visual Studio Code Status bar. Shows plan features, progress toward limits and the reset date
Visual Studio Top right corner, then Copilot Consumptions
JetBrains IDEs Status bar, then View quota usage
Xcode Menu bar
Eclipse Status bar at the bottom

What the usage pages do not show

The docs say usage is broken down by model, in credits and cost. They do not describe a per-token breakdown, and you generally cannot trace credits to a single prompt, session or feature. If you want to know where credits went, the model chart is the best clue: a more capable model and a long agent task cost the most.

Plans, as of October 29, 2026

The plans page lists these monthly allowances:

Plan Price per month Base credits Flex allotment
Free $0 Limited chat and agent usage Not included
Pro $10 $10 $5
Pro+ $39 $39 $31
Max $100 $100 $100

GitHub says flex allotments may change over time. Base credits are used first, then the flex allotment.

What to do when you run low

When you run out, the plans page says you can wait for the monthly reset, set a dollar budget for extra usage, or switch to a cheaper model. Paid plans can buy additional credits. A budget sends alerts at 75%, 90% and 100%. GitHub's April announcement also says the old fallback to a cheaper model at the limit no longer exists.

Annual Pro and Pro+ subscribers who stayed on the old system after June 1 use a different page. For them, GitHub's premium request guide points to Premium request analytics in the billing sidebar, and their counters reset on the 1st of each month at 00:00:00 UTC.
