## Key takeaways

- Google's Workspace Status Dashboard lists Gemini and showed no incidents on October 30, 2026.
- Google says "Something went wrong" can stem from location, age or account type, and advises trying again later.
- Gemini Apps has its own storage and rolling upload limits, separate from Google Drive storage.

When Gemini is not working, the cause is usually one of four things: the account, the browser, a full storage or upload limit, or a Google outage. Google's help pages and the Google Workspace Status Dashboard cover all four, and this guide walks through them in that order. Everything below comes from those pages, which we read on October 30, 2026.

Google's own advice for the vague "Something went wrong" message is short, so most of the work is figuring out which of the four problems you have.

## Check Google's status first

If Gemini fails for you and for other people, start with the [Google Workspace Status Dashboard](https://www.google.com/appsstatus/dashboard/). It lists Gemini as a product and shows each day of the past week. The legend has four states: Available, Service information, Service disruption and Service outage. When we opened it on October 30, 2026, it showed no incidents for Gemini.

1. Open the dashboard.
2. Find Gemini in the product list and check today's status.
3. Select Refresh to reload the data.
4. Select "View incident history" to see earlier events.

Times on the dashboard are in UTC. The page also offers an RSS feed and a JSON history file if you want alerts. If Gemini works for you but the dashboard shows nothing, Google says to contact Google Workspace Support for a problem that isn't listed. If the dashboard shows a disruption, there is nothing to fix on your side. Wait for Google.

## Fix "Something went wrong" and "Can't access this service"

Google's [sign-in help page](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/13278668) says "Something went wrong" can come from your location, your age or your account type. Its suggested fix is to try again later. Google adds that it uses signals to check that accounts have a record of normal activity and that real people are behind them.

"Can't access this service" has a clearer cause. Accounts managed through Family Link can't use the Gemini web app. Workspace administrators can turn access on for their users by following a separate Google help article.

So check which kind of account you are signed in with:

| Account | What Google says you need |
| --- | --- |
| Personal | Age 13 or older, or the applicable age in your country. A Family Link manager can turn off access for children under 13. |
| Work | A qualifying Google Workspace edition, and you must be 18 or older. |
| School | Your school's administrator must have turned the service on. |

If you have more than one Google Account in your browser, try signing in at gemini.google.com with a different one. Google's pages don't give this as a step, but the table shows why the account matters.

## Sign in again and check your browser

To sign in on the web, open gemini.google.com, select Sign in in the upper-right corner and log in with your Google Account. To sign out, open the menu on the left, select your profile picture or initial, and choose Sign out. Signing out and back in is a reasonable reset when a session looks stuck, though Google's pages don't list it as a fix.

Google's [Use Gemini Apps page](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/13275745) lists the supported browsers for gemini.google.com: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera and Edgium. If you use something else, switch to one of these.

You may also be blocked by signing out. Google says some people can't use Gemini Apps without signing in, including users of the Gemini Android app. Whether you can use it signed out depends on your location and device, and some features always need an account.

## Fix file upload errors

Google's [file upload page](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/14903178) covers the errors people hit when Gemini won't take a file.

- **Analysis went wrong.** Re-upload the file.
- **"Delete data to upload file."** Gemini Apps has its own storage limit for chats and uploaded files, separate from Google Drive or Workspace storage. On a personal account, delete Gemini Apps activity to free space, then wait several minutes before trying again. On a work or school account, only an administrator can free the space.
- **"You've reached your limit for chats with files."** Upload limits are rolling. Wait for the limit to reset, or move to a Google AI plan for higher limits.
- **"Your uploads may be too large for the best results."** Large files can make Gemini miss details. Use smaller files with less content.

If a file is rejected outright, compare it with the limits Google lists as of October 30, 2026:

- Up to 10 files per prompt, depending on availability. Each file in a folder counts.
- Videos up to 2 GB, and other file types up to 100 MB.
- Videos up to 5 minutes long, or 1 hour with Google AI Pro or Ultra.
- Audio up to 10 minutes, or 3 hours with Google AI Pro or Ultra.
- One code folder or GitHub repository of up to 5,000 files and 100 MB.
- ZIP files of up to 10 files and 100 MB, with no video or audio inside.

## What Google doesn't say

Google's pages give no fix for a Gemini that loads but answers badly, and no steps for clearing a browser cache or disabling extensions. The supported countries and languages sit in a separate help article that we did not read for this guide. If none of the steps here work, the pages point to the Gemini Apps Help Center and the Help community.
