Cursor vs Claude Code comes down to where you want the AI to live. [Cursor](https://cursor.com/docs) is an AI editor and coding agent with a catalog of models from many providers. [Claude Code](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/overview) is Anthropic's agentic coding tool that runs in your terminal, in an IDE, in a desktop app and in the browser. Cursor's paid plans start at $8 a month and Claude Code's at $20 a month, as of October 27, 2026.

This comparison is based on the products' docs and published results. We did not run either tool for this article, and neither company publishes a head-to-head benchmark, so there are no scores here.

## What each one is

Cursor describes itself as a coding agent for building ambitious software. Its docs list planning with Plan Mode, tracing how a repo fits together, finding and fixing bugs, and reviewing changes. You customize it with plugins, skills, MCP servers and rules, and it connects to GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps, Bitbucket, JetBrains, Slack and Linear.

Claude Code reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and works with git. It follows the Unix habit of composing with other tools: you can pipe a log into `claude -p` or run it in CI. It can run several agents in parallel, run scheduled tasks in the cloud, and be driven from a phone with Remote Control.

The two are not strictly rivals. Claude Code has a VS Code extension, and the docs link to installing it for Cursor too. Cursor's model catalog includes Anthropic's models.

## What each one costs

### Cursor plans, as of October 27, 2026

- Free, $0: limited agent and chat requests. No third-party models and no cloud agents.
- Plus, $8 a month: Cursor's own models only. No cloud agents or third-party models.
- Premium, $30 a month: 4x the Plus usage, cloud agents, automations and third-party models.
- Super, $100 a month: 15x Plus usage and priority model access at peak times.
- Ultra, $200 a month: 50x Plus usage and earliest access to new products and models.
- Teams, from $30 per user a month. Enterprise is custom.

Third-party models, such as Claude, GPT and Gemini, are billed on top of the plan at API list price from prepaid credit. Per the Cursor docs, Claude Sonnet 5.5 is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, and Claude Opus 5 is $5 and $25. Plus and Free do not include third-party models at all. Included usage is one pool that resets weekly.

Cursor's pricing page now carries Grok branding, and subscriptions are sold through X Subscription Corp, according to its FAQ. The legal footer still names Anysphere, Inc.

### Claude plans, as of October 27, 2026

- Pro, $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front): Claude Code included.

- Enterprise: $20 per seat, 20-seat minimum, plus usage at API rates. Billed annually.

Usage is shared across Claude on web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code, and paid plans also have weekly limits. ## How to choose

Pick Cursor if you want one editor with models from several providers and a free tier to start with. The cheapest plan only covers Cursor's own models, though. If you want Claude inside Cursor, you are on Premium at $30 a month and paying API rates for it.

Pick Claude Code if you work in the terminal, want to script the agent in CI, or want a flat subscription that covers Claude models. It starts at $20 a month and has no free tier.

You can also use both. The Claude Code extension installs in Cursor, so the choice is not all or nothing. For another coding agent in the same lane, see our [Claude Code vs Codex](https://claudegpt.si/news/claude-code-vs-codex) comparison.

## What we don't know

Neither company publishes a benchmark that pits the two against each other, and the models inside Cursor change often. Usage multipliers such as "4x Plus" are relative, and neither pricing page gives a number of requests or tokens per week. How far a plan goes depends on the model and the task. Test your own work on the cheapest paid plan of each before committing to a bigger one.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Cursor or Claude Code cheaper?

As of October 27, 2026, Cursor's Plus plan is $8 a month and Claude Pro, which includes Claude Code, is $20. Plus only covers Cursor's own models. Claude models in Cursor need Premium at $30 a month plus API-rate usage.

### Can you use Claude Code inside Cursor?

Yes. The Claude Code docs link to an extension for Cursor, and it needs a Claude subscription or Anthropic Console account.

### Does Claude Code have a free plan?

No. The Claude Free plan does not include Claude Code, according to claude.com/pricing on October 27, 2026. Cursor's Free plan has limited agent and chat requests.

### Which is better for the terminal?

Claude Code is built for it, with a CLI that you can pipe into and run in CI. Cursor's docs page we read does not describe CLI use, so we cannot compare the two there.
