Key takeaways

  • Claude Fable 5.1, released on September 1, 2026, is Anthropic's most capable generally available model and the successor to Fable 5.
  • Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 are the same model with different safeguards; Fable is open to Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise users and to developers.
  • Anthropic suggests Opus 5.5 for most work and keeps Fable 5.1 for demanding reasoning and long-horizon agent tasks.

Claude Fable is Anthropic's most capable generally available model line, built for the hardest coding and knowledge work. As of October 2026 the current version is Claude Fable 5.1, released on September 1, 2026, and ClaudeGPT Si follows each Fable release in its Models section with Anthropic's own pages as the source.

This explainer covers what Claude Fable is, how it relates to Opus and Mythos, who can use it, and what the safeguards mean in practice.

What Claude Fable is

Anthropic introduced Claude Fable 5 on June 9, 2026, and described it as a Mythos-class model made safe for general use. In other words, Fable carries the capabilities Anthropic had previously kept for vetted partners, wrapped in safeguards that let the public use it.

Fable 5.1 replaced it on September 1, 2026. Anthropic's release notes call it the successor to Fable 5 for long-running agentic coding, knowledge work and research. Its API ID is claude-fable-5-1.

Fable, Mythos and Opus side by side

The three names are easy to mix up. This table sorts them out, using Anthropic's descriptions as of October 2026.

Model What it is Who gets it
Claude Fable 5.1 Top model for demanding reasoning and long agentic work Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise users; developers through the API and cloud platforms
Claude Mythos 5.1 The same model as Fable 5.1 with different safeguards Trusted access programs only, for cybersecurity and life sciences
Claude Opus 5.5 Anthropic's suggested starting point for most workloads All current Claude surfaces

Anthropic says Opus 5.5, released on September 22, performs at the level of Fable 5.1 on most work. The models overview still keeps Fable 5.1 for the hardest reasoning jobs and for cases where Opus 5.5 falls short in your own tests.

Technical basics

Per the Claude Platform release notes, Fable 5.1 has:

  • a 1M token context window by default
  • up to 128k output tokens
  • adaptive thinking that is always on
  • a text watermark on what it generates

The models overview lists it as the slowest of the current models, which fits its job: long tasks where depth matters more than speed. Anthropic says it will not retire Fable 5.1 before September 1, 2027.

Safeguards and fallback

Fable runs safety checks on every request. Requests in areas such as offensive cybersecurity techniques and much of dual-use biology can fall back to an Opus model, and the Claude app shows a notice when that happens. Automatic switching is on by default and can be turned off in settings. Anthropic's help center says Fable is not recommended for professional biology research and drug development at this time.

Fable also needs 30-day data retention for safety monitoring by default, with a privacy option called Enterprise Frontier Safeguards rolling out to eligible enterprise customers in phases.

Where to follow Claude Fable news

Anthropic posts launches on its newsroom and API changes in its release notes. Those are the primary sources. ClaudeGPT Si, a free and independent publication, reads them and puts each release in context, with sources and dates on every story. Our recap of the Claude 5.5 releases shows where Fable 5.1 sits in the autumn timeline, and the RSS feed brings the next story to your reader.

If you run Fable in production, also read Anthropic's model pages yourself: a migration or retirement date is worth checking at the source.
