## Key takeaways

- The Claude Code extension needs VS Code 1.94.0 or later and an Anthropic account, and it does not work in Restricted Mode.
- The extension bundles its own CLI but does not add claude to your PATH, so the terminal needs the standalone install.
- Run /doctor inside Claude Code, or claude doctor from a shell, for an automated check of your setup.

If Claude Code is not working in vscode (VS Code), the cause is usually one of five things: the VS Code version is too old, the Spark icon is hidden, you are signed out, `claude` is missing from your terminal PATH, or a proxy blocks the connection. Each one has a fix in Anthropic's [VS Code documentation](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/vs-code). The steps below follow those docs, in the order most people need them. Facts are as of October 29, 2026, and the docs change often.

This guide is for people who installed the Claude Code extension and see a missing icon, a blank panel, a sign-in loop or an error. Plan on 10 minutes. If you have not installed Claude Code at all yet, start with our [install guide](/news/claude-code-how-to-install).

## What you need first

Anthropic lists two requirements for the extension:

- VS Code 1.94.0 or later. Check it under **Help > About**.
- An Anthropic account. Any paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) or a Claude Console account works, and no API key is needed.

The extension bundles its own copy of the CLI for the chat panel. It does not put `claude` on your PATH. That difference explains several of the problems below.

## Claude Code extension won't install or doesn't appear

1. Confirm VS Code is 1.94.0 or later.
2. Check that VS Code is allowed to install extensions on your machine.
3. Install from the [VS Code Marketplace](https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=anthropic.claude-code), or search for "Claude Code" in the Extensions view (`Ctrl+Shift+X`, or `Cmd+Shift+X` on Mac).
4. If it installed but does not show up, restart VS Code or run **Developer: Reload Window** from the Command Palette.

## Spark icon not visible

The docs give five checks, in this order:

1. Open a file. A folder alone is not enough for the icon in the Editor Toolbar.
2. Check the VS Code version under **Help > About**.
3. Run **Developer: Reload Window**.
4. Temporarily disable conflicting AI extensions, such as Cline or Continue.
5. Check workspace trust. The extension does not work in Restricted Mode.

You can open the panel without the icon. Click the Spark icon in the Activity Bar or **Claude Code** in the Status Bar, or run **Open in New Tab** from the Command Palette.

## Claude Code panel is blank or never responds

If the panel is blank or fails to load, update the extension to version 2.1.309 or later, then run **Developer: Reload Window**. If it still fails, run **Claude Code: Show Logs** from the Command Palette and [report the issue on GitHub](https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues).

If the panel loads but Claude never answers, Anthropic suggests this order:

1. Check your internet connection.
2. Start a new conversation.
3. Run `claude` in the terminal to see more detailed errors.
4. If it persists, file a GitHub issue.

For a broader check, run `/doctor` inside Claude Code. Anthropic describes it as an automated check of your installation, settings, extensions and context use, and it proposes fixes it can apply after you confirm. If `claude` will not start at all, run `claude doctor` from your shell instead.

## Sign-in and login errors

Two cases are in the docs.

**You still see the sign-in prompt although `ANTHROPIC_API_KEY` is set.** VS Code may not have inherited your shell environment. Launch it from a terminal with `code .`, or sign in with your Claude account.

**"Not logged in · Please run /login".** The sign-in screen should reopen on its own. If it does not, run **Developer: Reload Window**.

If you are asked to sign in again after you already did, your OAuth token may have expired. Anthropic's install troubleshooting page says to run `/login`, and to check that your system clock is accurate if it happens often, because token validation depends on timestamps.

When the cause is unclear, a clean re-login fixes most cases:

1. Run `/logout`.
2. Close Claude Code.
3. Start `claude` again and finish authentication.

If the browser does not open, press `c` to copy the login URL and paste it into a browser yourself. On WSL2, SSH or containers, open that URL in a browser on your local machine, then paste the code it shows into the `Paste code here` prompt. If pasting into the prompt does nothing, run `claude auth login`, which reads the code from standard input.

If you get `API Error: 403 Request not allowed` after signing in, check these:

- Pro or Max: confirm your subscription is active at claude.ai/settings.
- Console users: confirm your account has the "Claude Code" or "Developer" role, which admins assign on the Console's Members page.
- Behind a proxy: corporate proxies can interfere with API requests, so see Anthropic's network configuration page.

## Command not found: claude in the terminal

Installing the extension does not add `claude` to your shell PATH. To run `claude` in VS Code's integrated terminal, install the standalone CLI from Anthropic's [setup page](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/setup.md). Open the terminal with `` Ctrl+` `` (`` Cmd+` `` on Mac) and run `claude`. If it is still not found after installing, follow the PATH steps in our [install guide](/news/claude-code-how-to-install) or Anthropic's [troubleshooting page](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/troubleshoot-install.md#verify-your-path).

If you use an external terminal instead, run `/ide` inside Claude Code to connect it to VS Code.

## Errors that have their own entry

The VS Code page maps these messages to specific fixes in the [error reference](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/errors.md):

| What you see | Where Anthropic documents it |
| --- | --- |
| `Claude Code process exited with code 1` | Error reference, "Claude Code process exited with code N" |
| `Could not locate the Claude CLI on PATH` | Error reference, same name |
| `SSL certificate verification failed` | Error reference, "SSL certificate errors" |
| `The connection to Claude Code ended before this message completed` | Error reference, same name |

Dictation or the Web tab can fail behind a company proxy that inspects TLS traffic. The fix needs extension 2.1.307 or later. Set `NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS` in the `env` block of `~/.claude/settings.json` to the full path of a PEM file with your proxy's root certificate, which your IT team can give you:

```json
{
  "env": {
    "NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS": "/etc/ssl/certs/example-ca.pem"
  }
}
```

On Windows, double each backslash in the path.

## Keyboard shortcuts that do nothing

On macOS Tahoe or later, the system Game Overlay shortcut takes `Cmd+Esc`. Clear **Game Overlay** under **System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Game Controllers**, or assign a new key to `Claude Code: Focus input` in the Keyboard Shortcuts editor (`Cmd+K Cmd+S`).

If `Ctrl+J` inserts a newline in the prompt box, unbind it in Claude Code's `keybindings.json` (extension 2.1.309 or later):

```json
{
  "bindings": [
    {
      "context": "Chat",
      "bindings": {
        "ctrl+j": null
      }
    }
  ]
}
```

The file lives in `~/.claude` unless `CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR` is set.

## Garbled text in the integrated terminal

If characters show up as boxes or smears when you run Claude Code in the VS Code terminal, the GPU renderer is the likely cause. Run `/terminal-setup` inside Claude Code to set `terminal.integrated.gpuAcceleration` to `"off"`, or set it yourself and reload the window.

## Last resort: reinstall the extension

Uninstall **Claude Code** from the Extensions view, then install it again. Note that running `claude` in a VS Code terminal reinstalls the extension automatically. To stop that, turn off **Auto-install IDE extension** in `/config`, set `autoInstallIdeExtension` to `false`, or set `CLAUDE_CODE_IDE_SKIP_AUTO_INSTALL=1`.

If nothing works, check the [GitHub repository](https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code) for known issues, use `/feedback` inside Claude Code, or contact Anthropic support. For account or billing problems, sign in at claude.ai, click your initials and choose **Get help**.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why is the Claude Code icon missing in VS Code?

Open a file, because a folder alone does not show the Editor Toolbar icon. Then check VS Code is 1.94.0 or later, reload the window, disable conflicting AI extensions such as Cline or Continue, and make sure the workspace is trusted.

### Why does claude not work in the VS Code terminal?

The extension does not put claude on your PATH. Install the standalone CLI from Anthropic's setup page, then open the integrated terminal and run claude.

### How do I log in to Claude Code again in VS Code?

Run /login to re-authenticate. If login keeps failing, run /logout, close Claude Code, then start claude again and complete authentication.

### What does the Claude Code process exited with code 1 error mean?

It is an error printed by the program that launches Claude Code, not by Claude Code itself. Anthropic documents it in the error reference under its own entry.
