## Key takeaways

- OpenAI's docs describe Work as a mode inside ChatGPT for finished files and Codex as a separate product for software work.
- As of November 2, 2026, both are included in Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise and share one usage allowance.
- Codex also runs in a CLI, an IDE extension and Codex Cloud, while Work lives in the ChatGPT apps.

ChatGPT Work vs Codex is a question of what you are handing off. As of November 2, 2026, OpenAI's [docs](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/use-chatgpt) describe Work as a mode inside ChatGPT for finished files such as documents and decks, and Codex as a separate product for software work that shares the app. They are not the same thing, but they run on the same engine and draw from the same usage allowance.

That shared allowance is the part that surprises people. Per OpenAI's [pricing page](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/pricing), "ChatGPT Work and Codex share usage," with the same pricing, credits and limits. A long Work task can use up what you would have spent on coding.

This comparison rests on OpenAI's docs, not on hands-on testing.

## ChatGPT Work vs Codex at a glance

| | ChatGPT Work | Codex |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it is | A mode you switch on in ChatGPT | A separate product that shares the ChatGPT app |
| Built for | Briefs, decks, spreadsheets, analyses, recurring updates | Writing, reviewing and fixing code |
| Where you use it | ChatGPT desktop, mobile and web | ChatGPT desktop, mobile and web, plus the CLI, IDE extension and Codex Cloud |
| What you see | Finished outputs, with technical detail hidden | Developer detail such as diff and review views |
| Plans | Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, Enterprise | The same plans |
| Usage allowance | Shared with Codex | Shared with Work |

The plan list and the shared allowance come from the pricing page. The rest comes from OpenAI's [guide to using ChatGPT](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/use-chatgpt) and its [docs home](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs).

## What ChatGPT Work is for

OpenAI's [get started guide](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/get-started-with-work) says to use Chat for quick answers and short drafts, and Work for tasks with a clear outcome: a brief, a deck, an analysis, a recurring update or a file. Work can use your files, plugins and approved tools. On the desktop app it can also use local files, apps and the browser. You can follow progress, change direction and approve important actions.

Its listed uses are turning notes into a presentation, building a comparison spreadsheet and setting up scheduled tasks. Plugins for Slack, Google Drive, email and calendars are added under Customize, then Plugins. Our guide to [what Work costs](https://claudegpt.si/news/is-chatgpt-work-free) covers the plans in detail.

## What Codex is for

Codex is aimed at developers. In the desktop app you pick it from the product selector, not from the ChatGPT switcher. OpenAI lists these ways to use it:

- The [Codex CLI](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/cli), a terminal tool that reads files, edits them and runs commands in a local repository. It also runs non-interactively in scripts and CI.
- An IDE extension.
- [Codex Cloud](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/cloud), where each task gets its own workspace and can keep running while your computer sleeps. You review the changed files and test results, then commit or open a pull request.

Code review through GitHub, cloud environments, and the Slack and Linear integrations need Plus or higher, per the pricing page. They are not available with API key access.

## Where they overlap

OpenAI says the two overlap on research, documents and presentations. Its [workspace overview](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/enterprise/chatgpt-work-overview) says they "share core execution, isolation, and permission mechanisms." Both can run locally on your computer or in the cloud. A local task uses approved files and apps on your machine, and a cloud task runs on OpenAI infrastructure without your files, browser sessions or network. A task cannot switch from local to cloud during a turn.

The models are shared too. GPT-6.1 Sol is available in Work and Codex but not in Chat. GPT-6.1 Terra is available in both on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. OpenAI recommends GPT-6 Astra for demanding Work tasks, GPT-6.1 Sol for complex work at lower cost and Luna for simpler ones.

## One allowance, two uses

As of November 2, 2026, OpenAI publishes estimated limits for Plus only, per five hours: 15 to 160 local messages on GPT-6.1 Sol and 350 to 3,000 on GPT-6 Luna. It calls these estimates. Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit. Cloud tasks may use more of your allowance than local messages.

Both products are in the Free plan at $0 a month, with Go at $8, Plus at $20, Pro from $100 and Business at $20 per user a month billed annually. If you use both, count them as one budget. For how the Work side stacks up against Anthropic's agent, see [ChatGPT Work vs Claude Cowork](https://claudegpt.si/news/chatgpt-work-vs-claude-cowork). For Codex on Plus specifically, see [whether Codex is included in ChatGPT Plus](https://claudegpt.si/news/is-codex-included-in-chatgpt-plus).

## Which one to use

Use Work when the result is a file you will read, such as a deck, a spreadsheet or a summary of several documents. Use Codex when the result is a change to a codebase that you will review as a diff. The docs do not say that either one is blocked from the other's job, only that the interface and style differ.

OpenAI's own page is not fully consistent on the boundary. It lists Chat, Work and Codex as three side-by-side choices, yet describes Codex as a separate product. Watch the docs for changes, since the products are moving quickly.

## Frequently asked questions

No. OpenAI's docs describe Work as a mode in ChatGPT for finished deliverables and Codex as a separate developer product that shares the app. They share execution mechanisms, models and usage limits.

### Do ChatGPT Work and Codex share usage limits?

Yes. OpenAI's pricing page says Work and Codex share usage and use the same pricing, credits and limits.

### Is Codex free?

OpenAI's pricing page lists Work and Codex in the Free plan at $0 a month, described as for quick coding tasks. Cloud features and code review through GitHub need Plus or higher.

### Can ChatGPT Work run on my computer?
