Anthropic said on October 27 that it is expanding its partnership with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), giving federal, state, local, tribal and territorial governments a 40% discount on Claude. The announcement puts the expected saving at $1 billion for the government.
The discount covers Claude Enterprise, Claude for Government and the Claude API. Anthropic says it is the first time one discount applies across every way of buying Claude, including through cloud providers.
What the discount covers
Agencies can buy at the discounted rate now through GSA's Multiple Award Schedule, the government's standard purchasing contract. Purchases made through cloud providers are due "in the coming months", according to Anthropic. The company says there is no minimum spend, so agencies pay only for what they use. The announcement lists no per-seat or per-token prices, so the dollar cost per agency is still unknown.
The deal reaches beyond federal agencies. State, local, tribal and territorial governments can use the same rate.
Usage numbers Anthropic gives
Anthropic says about 500 federal, state and local organizations already use Claude. It says weekly active users of Claude for Government are up about eightfold since February, and federal civilian agency usage grew about twentyfold over the past year. These are the company's own figures.
The post also lists results from public-sector customers. Utah gave Claude Code to 34 developers across 10 state agencies. In a four-week pilot, 80% had a working setup within 30 minutes and 71% said they saved 20 or more hours. These are Anthropic's summaries of customer pilots, not independent measurements.
Security authorization
Claude for Government became generally available on September 30. Anthropic says it runs at FedRAMP High, the federal security level meant for sensitive but unclassified work. On Amazon Bedrock in AWS GovCloud, Claude is FedRAMP High authorized, and select models are authorized for Defense Department Impact Levels 4 and 5. Claude on Google Cloud's Vertex AI is also FedRAMP High authorized. Claude Enterprise is still in the process of getting FedRAMP Moderate authorization.
What to watch
Anthropic says a program to help agencies roll out Claude is coming in the coming weeks. The cloud-provider discount has no date yet. Anthropic filed to go public on October 26: see Anthropic IPO filing shows $16.3B H1 revenue.
