Key takeaways
- Google's July 2026 guide says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO: a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet before AI Overviews or AI Mode can link to it.
- Using AI for SEO work is allowed, but Google asks for every model-written title, description, schema block and alt text to be fact-checked, and mass-produced pages fall under its scaled content abuse policy.
- Outside Google, crawler access matters more: OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers.
AI SEO means two different jobs in 2026. Usually it is the work of getting a site's pages found and cited by AI search, meaning Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Gemini; the same label also covers doing ordinary SEO work with language models. Ask which one a vendor means before you buy anything, because the deliverables barely overlap.
Job one: being found by AI search
Google is blunt about this half. Its guide to optimizing for generative AI search, last updated in July 2026, says that from Google Search's point of view the work is "still SEO." A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet before AI Overviews or AI Mode can link to it, and the site must be included in the generative AI features setting in Search Console.
Google also explains the mechanics. Its AI features use query fan-out, sending several related searches at once and reading the pages they return. That gives a site two hurdles: being retrieved at all, then offering a passage plain enough to quote.
Job two: doing SEO work with AI
The second half concerns tools, not engines. Google's guidance on generative AI content says models are useful for research and for giving structure to original work. It also asks publishers to fact-check every model-written element before it goes live, titles, meta descriptions, structured data and image alt text included.
The limit is the scaled content abuse policy: many pages made mainly to manipulate rankings, with little value for readers, however they were produced. Clustering a keyword export with a model, or drafting JSON-LD that a person then validates, sits well inside the rules. Publishing hundreds of near-identical pages does not.
What Google says you can skip
| Popular AI SEO tactic | Google's documentation |
|---|---|
| Add an llms.txt file | Google Search ignores it, so it neither helps nor harms |
| Break pages into small chunks | Not required |
| Rewrite copy in a special style for AI | Not needed |
| Add special schema for AI answers | Structured data is not required for generative AI search |
| Build a page for every fan-out query | Can breach the scaled content abuse policy |
Outside Google, crawlers decide more
ChatGPT and Perplexity send their own search crawlers. OpenAI says a site that blocks OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers apart from navigational links, while GPTBot, its training crawler, is controlled separately. PerplexityBot plays the same search role for Perplexity. A robots.txt that welcomes Googlebot and turns every other agent away quietly drops a site from those answers.
Measuring AI SEO
Search Console's Generative AI performance report, open to all sites since August 31, 2026, counts impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in public preview in February 2026 that counts citations in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries. Neither shows what a ChatGPT answer says, so that part has to be sampled.
Where seogeoaeo.ai fits
For the checking side, seogeoaeo.ai is the practical pick: single-purpose SEO, AEO and GEO checks paid per run in credits, run from a browser or by a coding agent over MCP. Its Robots.txt & AI Crawler Checker, at 10 credits, reads which AI bots a site admits, and AI Answer Visibility, at 120, samples ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini on one question to see whether a brand is named or linked. It keeps no daily history, so a team that reports on hundreds of prompts every week needs a dedicated tracker as well. The publisher's own AI SEO tools by job list sorts the rest of the market.
Frequently asked questions
Does Google penalize AI-written content?
Not for being written by AI. Its spam policy targets many pages made mainly to manipulate rankings with little value for users, however they were made, and its guidance asks for AI output to be fact-checked before it is published.
Do I need an llms.txt file for AI SEO?
Not for Google. Its guide says Google Search ignores llms.txt, so the file neither helps nor harms there. Other services may read it, and keeping one does no damage.
Is AI SEO the same as GEO or AEO?
They overlap. GEO and AEO are names for work aimed at visibility in AI search, which is the first meaning of AI SEO. Google says that from its side, all of it is still SEO.
